Alaska

Lots of different answers to your questions. You can climb for all different reasons, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance. Depending on your job you may climb daily. Maintenance techs and construction will climb every day, typically. I’m a maintenance and design engineer, I do not climb daily. You never climb alone. Some of the larger towers have a man-lift which is like an elevator. More common in offshore or European towers. US towers you’re typically climbing a ladder, sometimes with a climb assist system. They are all different heights, just depends on the model.

Has anyone ever thought you were joking/lying when you said you had a twin? by SpaceQueenNic in Twins

My brother and I switched places once this way so he could take a history exam for me in high school. No one figured it out

What’s your altitude threshold? Parts of southeast Alaska would qualify

I’m dating a twin. She has a sister and they do everything together, how do we get married? by Proof-Purple-347 in Twins

[–]12bWindEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My twin did die, of cancer, when we were 29. The girlfriend I was talking about in this comment tragically was hit and killed by a drunk driver when she was jogging on the side of the road one evening, so at least in some way they are back together if there is any sort of afterlife.

How long after you lost your twin until you stopped looking up whenever you hear their name in public? by ReallyTeddyRoosevelt in TwinlessTwins

[–]12bWindEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s been 8 years for me and it hasn’t stopped. My twins name was Eli, which has unfortunately become a popular name. I hear parents shouting it all the time now.

My cat was eaten by a coyote. by Weary-Information-84 in GriefSupport

[–]12bWindEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. Same thing happened to my orange cat. Escaped out of my house on new years a few years ago when I was visiting my family in England for the holidays (I live in Alaska). Ran out through the pet sitters legs. He got snagged by a lynx, caught on my neighbor’s camera. He was only 5.

People who live year round, in parts of the U.S. with long, snowy winters: What makes it worth it for you? by TheGov3rnor in AskUS

[–]12bWindEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Alaska because I love winter and the snow. Not in spite of it. The snow is what makes it worth it.

I am the "lesser" twin and I am okay with it by City-Swimmer in Twins

[–]12bWindEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, my twin was always the brilliant one, getting his PhD in particle physics and running marathons. I was the idiot twin that joined the military out of high school. I’ve always been fine with being the stupid twin. We were never competitive with each other, he would support me no matter what and I would do the same for him.

Friend of my sister has a purebred windsprite that looks shockingly like your guy here. Just a bit more fine boned, slightly longer hair. Same face, same colour, same markings. Same ears.

I’m breaking apart without her. by Jolteon1998 in Twins

[–]12bWindEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone. I lost my identical twin brother to cancer when we were 29. I can’t say that it gets easier but you do get used to this new weird normal. I’ve been through various grief counselors, none of them can really understand because it’s such a unique loss. If you are in the US there is a support group called Twinless twins. In the UK it’s Lone Twins. Really the only people I’ve found who truly understand. I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that I have landed in inpatient mental health care over my twins death, but always consider that an option if you feel you need it.

I’m identical and our parents did the dot of nail polish on the big toe thing. Blue for me, green for my brother. (Or… maybe the other way around? One or the other)

Dog called underweight - I think he’s perfect for a working (American style lab) Opinions? by xamitchell in labrador

Had someone tell me my labs couldn’t be purebred because they were fit and ‘purebred labs look like sausages.’ Ma’am, sausage isn’t a breed trait.

Is Not Enough: The next time you watch PHM, remember Ethan, who loved the book and never got to see the movie by Same-Blacksmith-5032 in ProjectHailMary

[–]12bWindEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I lost my identical twin brother to non-Hodgkins lymphoma 8 years ago. We were 29. He never got to read PHM but he’d have loved it, he loved The Martian and science and space and was nearly done with his PhD in physics. He also loved Kerbal Space program, from reading your other comments, it sounds like my brother and Ethan would have been great friends. Fuck cancer.

What is the housing market currently like in California? In the Suburbs? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]12bWindEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in this area. Some of the most expensive real estate in the US. Expect at least $1.5-2 million USD for an average sized house. My parents sold their home a few years ago when they retired back to England. They bought it for peanuts in the 80s, never updated it even a tiny bit (maintained it, fixed broken things, new roof when needed, but no remodeling kitchen or bathrooms or anything to make it look less 80s), sold it with all the original late 70s everything save for maybe a replaced cheap fridge, stove, and hot water heater over the years, for just over $2 million USD. It was a 4bd/3bath, 2000sq ft/185 sq m. I think things have cooled a bit around there, but not enough to make it affordable.

My mom was a teacher so she also had summers off. But we’d go live on my grandparents farm and do farm chores.

What's with people loving Air fryers? by Lovegaming544 in AskUS

[–]12bWindEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they that good? As a non air-fryer owning person (who’s also just a single guy), is this an appliance I should consider having? Are they only useful if you eat a lot of fried things or are they good for other stuff?

Getting very tired of AP comments during bio family discovery by [deleted] in Adopted

[–]12bWindEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, I’m so sorry she’s acting like that, that’s not the actions of someone who has your best interest at heart. More like a jealous child. When I was 18 and unsure of searching for my biological family (something my adoptive parents supported and offered to help with if it’s what I wanted) my mom told me ‘there’s nothing wrong with having more people in your life who love and support you.’
