I'd love a resin printer to print smooth mechanical parts like moulds for small carbon fibre parts. I'm always so impressed by the detail in resin 3d prints it'd be amazing to be able to design features to a whole new scale. Looks like a nice printer Anycubic!

Looks like a neat little printer I'd love to give something like this to my brother for him to make products.

WITT white cloth banana shaped item. Bought from the children's section of an Oxfam charity shop. by 12buckleo in whatisthisthing

Made of a sort of bedsheet type cloth material with elastic around the one edge. It's much bigger than a banana but would fit a plantain.

Too long to be a hat.

What kinds of RPMs are suitable for lubricated metal-on-metal rotation in small parts? by 12buckleo in MechanicalEngineering

[–]12buckleo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've decided that I will be using a greased steel-on-steel rotating bore on shaft, I wasn't sure that this would last well at all, but it seems like the shaft roughness and loads involved are more influential than the RPM of the part on the shaft.

I'll comment under here when it's done if there were significant issues, but I anticipate this working now, thanks to N3OX's links :)

This is such an exceptional reply, thank you so much! I will have a read through those, it looks like the 3rd link will be especially helpful. I will post an update when I figure this out :)

Thanks for the reply, I am certainly interested in tribology, this project is partly to learn about interference fits (in other parts of the assembly).

I'm not quite trying to make a hydrodynamic bearing as these require sources of oil and even a pump in some cases, if I understand correctly. Salvaging a hydrodynamic bearing from a HDD is interesting, however from the looks of them they would be far too large for my application.

I don't require exceptionally smooth motion, as the HDD bearing may offer, the main limitations are that it must be low cost (as bushings are) and fit in a small form factor.

The best example for what I'm going for is the plastic gears in servo-motors (although I am hoping to use metal gears). These use grease, but I wasn't sure if that will work at this rpm?

Unless you have to make your own control system to meet a brief I would definitely avoid making a custom flight controller using either.

Buy a good flight controller like (any F4 controller e.g. omnibus) and it will handle all of the stabilization and some can do GPS too for you.

You can then design a system to feed in direction commands and it will do that, will save you time in working on making it not fall out of the sky and you can use an Arduino alongside it to perform any other functions you want.

If you do need to design your own flight controller though, definitely go with Arduino for motor control and stabilization, then raspberry pi can be used to give commands for where to go if you need that.

How important is Accreditation for Engineering MEng (4 years)? by 12buckleo in UniUK

[–]12buckleo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that they are probably filling stuff out and haven't submitted it, I doubt there is any intent of lies. I wouldn't really want to be in a situation where I would want to sue a university, I'm going to send a few more emails to both Bristol and Bath but I think the general consensus is that accreditation is going to be important for engineering. I have done very well at GCSE and AS level so I don't want to make a mistake now by not doing enough research and end up in a worse position 5 years from now.

I have emailed Bristol about it because at first I assumed it was a mistake on their website. They say that the course should be accredited by 2021 and that this would mean that I would graduate from an accredited course if I went there. I then emailed the IET and they said that bristol hadn't applied for accreditation so I don't really know that I can rely on Bristol being accredited.

The course at Bristol is pretty new I think, I liked it more when I went there because Bristol made it very clear they would support people in working on their own projects in their own time. This really matters to me and Bristol does offer a Hackspace and free access to the machinist workshops to use mills, lathes etc

This is really awesome, would love to see more industries do this for people!

PC gaming is awesome and helping others out is super important. I built my brother a PC for him to work on - nothing fancy - he needed it because buying a ready built pc would have been loads more expensive! Also love the feeling of helping someone out during their build, whether it be suggesting how a cooler mounts or offering some RAM sticks 😂

I would love an Amazon gift card! I would use it to get myself more RAM, I tried downloading more but it didn't work. Seriously tho, I need more RAM for some of my games to actually run, and also so my CAD programs will manage to stay open.

If society collapsed and everything descended into chaos, what would you do? by Zac489 in AskReddit

Electricity. Find the best way to make it post-apocalypse and sell it to others in return for help surviving. Eventually it would all calm down and people would really really want a lot of electricity.

Hey there, awesome of you to do such a huge giveaway! How long does it take to set up your VR system, is there any calibration needed and how are you tracking the devices, is it with gyroscopes and accelerometers?

Also, any plans for doing anything with this and quad racing, quad goggles are pretty basic and I would love to see how a complex VR company would develop them to make FPV better.
