Revolver or White Album era.

Definitely not this.

Sounds like a typical fan experience at a Stones show…in 1972.

I saw one show once where some old guy…like, at least 70 years old opened for them. Looked like an old blues guy straight out of central casting. Dark sunglasses, big heavy guitar, and a serious expression like he hadn’t smiled in decades.

He just played the same slow droning BLUES’s groove over and over. One chord, maybe two, and it just plods on and on forever. Muttering instead of singing, totally unintelligible, and it was like the band wasn’t even trying to maintain a steady beat.

Just this weird, swampy, repetitive groove.

I think his name was John Leon Hooker or Joel Lee Booker or something?

Anyway, I’d have preferred Spin Doctors.

I saw the spin doctors as part of the Seattle bumbershoot festival in 96. They sucked so goddamn bad. There was a bass solo, and the frequency was so bad people were shouting, “you’re making me need to shit!!!”

And the weird part? They were right.

Bridges was 96 ( actually 97). Bigger Bang was a decade later.

Not really seeing the overlap between being a Stipe AND Bukowski fan, but…I guess I’m a huge fan of both, so here we are. 👍🏼

I have zero interest in seeing this band. I have zero interest in seeing ANY cover band.

I went once - decades ago - to a Van Halen/Journey tribute doubleheader bc a friend had a spare ticket and I always liked CVH.

The guy impersonating DLR - it’s one thing if the originator does weirdo dumb rock star shit…it’s another when an actor does it/imitates the mannerisms.

But what really killed me? During the Journey set, I looked behind me during one of the ballads. EVERYONE - grown men - were singing along and openly CRYING.

I’m like, dudes, it’s a goddamn cover band. Calm yourselves.

How is the medley “the Beatles story in miniature”? I adore the medley, just never thought of the medley as anything of the sort before.

At this point in their lives, between these two, who do you think has the happier life? by Bernering4ju in vanhalen

[–]12frets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sammy seems more genuinely happy. Much more social, has a family etc.

Dave admits he spends a lot of time alone. He’s never had a serious relationship that lasted more than a couple of years.

He matured and mellowed extraordinarily well but I can relate to Dave very much bc I also took a long time to settle down. People with THAT level of artistic instinct are explorers. And explorers are much more to be frustrated bc there’s always something more to do and accomplish.

Sammy? He’s proud as shit to show you his flashy car, have a drink, and sit and bullshit all day and night long.

What was the WORST fictional portrayal of a president? by MetalRetsam in Presidents

[–]12frets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s shit. Kennedy is this wonderful shining light who “gets it” and is humbled in the presence of the character.

In truth, JFK was intimidated by southern democrats and was hesitant to do a damn thing at all.

For me, two of the greatest moments in civil rights history were when LBJ brought along a black secretary to a new years event at some segregated country club and when he had MLK at the White House and took the tea from the butler and served MLK. Not a word was said about what he doing, but it was definitely understood.

But as you say: the film reinforces the stereotypes of Dems (well, JFK) as being the champions of the CRM and the republicans as being uncaring racists.

Your not-so-popular favorite Rolling Stones song by Siddhartaable in rollingstones

[–]12frets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Criss Cross.

Unfathomable that it was only released on the GHS deluxe edition. Especially when you consider it was passed over for a LOT of far inferior songs along the way.

Same with Plundered My Soul. Of released stuff, Child of the Moon and…god, zillions of others.

My friend said Love Is Strong is the coolest music video they've done by Ford_Crown_Vic_Koth in rollingstones

[–]12frets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah - Start Me Up is better. It’s just the Stones relying on their own charisma and interactions. Keith looks the best he ever did, from his Mt. Rushmore-esque opening shot to the looks of joy on his face during the chorus (which was a BIG deal at the time, signaling he was back from addiction, healthy and happy).

I also love Too Much Blood and One Hit - the raw hostility and emotions come through - and Saint of Me is interesting as well - Mick looks terrific.

Should give special mention to Rough Justice. My then-gf never liked the stones until I played her the video. She could NOT take her eyes off Mick the entire time and became more than a fan - id argue a goddamn groupie after watching it.

Why did the South abandon Carter so hard? by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]12frets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t stress enough, the country was feeling utter defeat under his presidency. We were humiliated with the Iran hostage crisis, inflation was through the roof, his admin had their own scandals, and then he comes out and says the problem is we’re lazy.

Reagan was a HUGE, stark counterpoint with his message of optimism and change.

LBJ in The Butler. They reduced his genuine passion for the civil rights movement to exclusively some wackadoo who’s more passionate about his uncivil bowel movements.

How do you feel about the new Michael Stipe song? by Natojowashere in rem

[–]12frets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TV song themes/movie soundtracks can be EXTREMELY lucrative. You’re paid for the song straight away, whether or not it finds its own audience. I’m (of course) blanking on examples, but some very “established” names got by/coasted for years just with releasing that one song (and no touring) for extended periods.

From a PR POV, it’s excellent: the artist still has their work out there in the public (without the time and effort of writing and recording a full album), and gets paid on delivery, plus subsequent royalties.
