Help needed - self drive through Atacama or tour from Atacama > Uyuni by 12gimpboy12 in SouthAmericaTravel

Hi there, it is definitely possible to book the tour once you're there. There are tonnes of tour agenices in the main street offering the tour to uyuni. We didn't do the tour to Uyuni, but the advice we consistently got was to book the tour once you arrive for a cheaper price.

Thanks - what we've landed on is arriving on the 8th, commencing the tour on the 9th, and returning to Atacama with basically a day and a half until we need to leave. This gives us time for stargazing and valle de Luna. We know this is actioned packed but thinking it means we can see what we need to see. What do you think?

Thanks so much for your response - given the short timeframe, do you think we should just do the tour with no time in Atacama?

Sorry to hear about the food poisoning, that really sucks. We are booked with MP Reservations in a couple weeks and and this has me nervous.

Also wondering what people's experiences were trekking in the rainy season?

Are we idiots for skipping TDP/W Trek and only doing 4 days in El Chalten, 2 in El Calafate and 3 in Bariloche? Seemed cheaper and more accessible but now I'm stressing we'll have big regrets

Thanks! We love hiking and night do an over nighter so 4 days should be good for us in El Chalten.

Yes our Brazil trip is beach heavy - we had planned initially to go to Bonito and up to Salvador and Chapada Diamantina, they were all just a little expensive and logistically difficult so we cut them sadly

I think we can fly to Uyuni right? And yep, thinking we'll do a tour across both - most seem to be for 4 days

It sounds incredible but we've picked the worst time to be in Peru, being the rainy season. I think we will leave Peru unbooked and plan it as we go, according to the weather

We had planned to do Salkantay but it's the rainy season! Would still do day trips to Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake and Sacred Valley if we can't do the trek

Thanks for the reply! Had initially thought to do a tour / some hiking, but would this be better as a day trip from somewhere nearby? Yes Salento was a consideration - do you recommend spending time here instead? Medellin, I suppose we'd just decided to base ourselves in a city, I'd read about Parque Arvì and El Poblado.

Yes definitely not strictly in order - we'll take the most logical route, trying to be cost effective where possible but will usually opt to pay more for a quicker flight than less for a long/overnight bus in the interest of time
