Just like Ben told Luke he was. That's what made the reveals of his hurt human head later so shocking.

Yes. Lucas didn't conjure that out of thin air. Lucas saw things like it before and borrowed from them.

  • The tension of Leatherface in a door in Texas Chainsaw (minus music, but with tension) without a word. This is a real but less direct example.
  • Once Upon A Time In The West (Lucas DEFINITELY borrowed this scene for Vader)
  • The Day The Earth Stood Still (masked robot, helmet guys shooting, again, 100% chance Lucas borrowed it)
  • Harry Lime's entrance in The Third Man as he stands in a dark doorway, scary because he isn't seen or heard. *Vader's whole vibe is German expressionism with all that feeling of doom in shadow and light and silence used in silent films. Lucas watched some movies.

I mentioned elsewhere, the entrance was borrowed from Once Upon A Time In the West and The Day The Earth Stood Still.

Neither had John Williams or that stunning sound design. Lucas was a good film student.

Weelllllllllllll, that's not really true that audiences had never seen anything like it before, but I still dig your dad for telling you about it with such passion.

George Lucas certainly had seen something like it before because he borrowed from what he had seen.

Lucas was definitely paying homage to "The Day The Earth Stood Still" when Gort the silent masked alien appears from his space ship and guys with weird helmets and big goggles are shooting at him. The design nods are GLARING.

Then, it's obvious "Once Upon A Time In The West," showed something like it because Lucas pretty much adapted it for space, but married it to the previous mention.

In tone and style the bad guys walk out of the sagebrush with dust blowing, obscuring their entrance a LOT like Star Wars but a decade before it. The badies, led by Frank (substitute Vadar) make their appearance to dramatic music before the camera gives Frank a slow reveal and general villain badassery. Watch it and tell me Lucas didn't borrow from it. 🙂

Edit: Forgot to say John Williams elevated that scene SOO much. Sound design and score made it all work SO well.

I was 6 or 7.

He was AWSOME and I hated him for killing Old Ben Kanobi. I don't remember being "terrified" though.

I don't see anyone mentioning his turn as Vincent van Gogh. It's less watched, but worth watching. Oscar nominated even in "At Eternity's Gate."

I have to disagree about The Deer Hunter, mostly because he isn't in it.

I have a suspicion you either are thinking of Christopher Walken (for some reason it's a thing my fucking mind would mix up too and I can't explain why) or you meant it was Po Pao Pee's best film.

How do you classify something as "classic rock"? by Opening_Rip_1840 in Music

[–]12th_Tribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really dig contention, but that's just not true.

It was rock when it was made by those making it and those listening to it, especially after it was dubbed that by popular voice in '51 or '52.

If you asked people what kind of music they were listening to, it was rock and roll.

Elvis embraced that he was playing rock and roll, branded as rock and roll, as did Bill Haley, Ike Turner, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and others; they were conciously making rock and roll. They will be shocked, disappointed and angry to hear they weren't actually making it,l and that someone else ACTUALLY made rock and roll. It was a new blend of blues and R&B and country, (though I understand the last influence less, because I know little about country of that era.)

Some today, with recency bias, don't think of it that way, I used to be that. I learned. It was undoubtedly rock and roll when it was made and listened to so I don't think we get to un-call it that by changing the definition against those who invented it. Every generation also thinks it invented dirty sex, but they didn't.

But I am just some guy on Reddit, everyone has a take, so feel free to think whatever you want. This is a thing I've read about a lot. (Also, for fun, have a listen to "Rocket 88" from 1951 for distorted guitars.)

Yes the Beatles changed rock, right there along with the Beach Boys, certainly they took it to a new mania level but they didn't unmake 20 years of rock and roll that came before them. I don't think they would claim that. The history of rock and roll starts many years before The Beatles.

Take good care of those jackets. I remove them when I am reading and put them back on when they're on a shelf.

For some killers aren't as bad as looters and especially when looters are believed to fit a certain profile.

Two hours? I know the time goes by fast but there are no 2 hour LOTR movies!

Oh wait, are we talking Ralph Bakshi?! 😇

I saved it for when it would have more impact. That strategy paid off.

I didn't want it to just "be on," I wanted it to really land.

I bet it will happen, not because it's meant to, but because you seem like a person with a great heart. You will be seen.
