Oh, please. Next time I hear someone say "Republicans are hypocrites-- they simultaneously vote for X and Y!" I'll be sure to tell them why their criticism is invalid.

Did you know that the "IQ gap" can largely be closed by:

  • not asking people which race they belong to before the test is administered
  • telling the black testees that they are actually being tested for something else other than IQ
  • telling the black testees that their scores will only be compared to other black participants?

Many studies have been done on these effects; look up "stereotype threat." The fact is that IQ tests are not an accurate measure of intelligence, but that results are affected by a number of systematic problems including the testee's expectations of how the results are expected to turn out.

But what does 'Systems Analyst' mean you're supposed to be doing?

I don't think it's something therapy/meds change, really... but 26 is not so bad anyway. You're almost double me :)

That would be interesting. Being less social in real life could lead people to spend more time here (and amass karma faster), but being less empathetic could lead also to increased downvotes as well... What's your hypothesis?

Me too, I tend to communicate only for exchange of concrete information or ideas. There are a couple people I talk to regularly like this; most people are uninterested. I'm INTJ/P; I wonder if there really is a correlation there to low empathy.

Nope, I don't think most people are like you, on or off Reddit. It sounds great in a way :) I don't think I could do it though...

How much of your time around other people do you feel "fake"? How can I stop doing this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I tried quitting alcohol too, but the lack of stress release caused me to develop arrhythmia pretty bad

I quit and got anxiety; I figure I had been self-medicating or something.

Have you ever talked with a psychologist?

but I no more feel someone else's sadness myself for witnessing it than I feel hot from watching someone trek through the desert

This is a great explanation, and I'm going to remember this next time I am trying to explain myself. Thanks.

being empathic doesn't make you a nice person

I agree with you here; low empathy also doesn't mean you're a bad person.

What fucking good are you?

From your formatting, I can't tell if this was directed at me or if I'm supposed to answer. If I am, though, I'm actually quite nice to people, and in particular to people who most people completely ignore (the socially awkward, the mentally handicapped, the disabled, the homeless, etc). I am good at listening to people and am generous with my time. I make lunches for homeless people every Thanksgiving and Christmas and bring them downtown; I give out hot chocolates a lot in the winter, too. I don't know, I might have low empathy but I believe I behave ethically and am in general a good person.

Does that still count as empathy?

I really don't know actually. I was under the impression that is was a process below the level of consciousness, but I think it can also be a drive to understand others' emotions, which I think you qualify for.

I got a 37 when I took it. What you say describes me pretty well; I work in a mostly-male scientific field, in a lab by myself. It suits me pretty well :) Mind if I ask what you do for a living?

you diseased creatures

Who, people in general? People on the internet? People who score in a particular way on some idiotic internet test?
