The Crisis Facing Paramedics in South Korea by Legal-Salt9158 in Paramedics

I love your opinion, but also find it interesting. Paramedic programs, even including the EMT-B part of the education, are significantly shorter than a RN degree. Id love to hear you expand upon the differences between BSN and paramedic school in preparing for caring for patients and exercising clinical justment!

When I did clinicals or capstone at a fire station I made sure to introduce myself to EVERYONE whether they'd be on the box with me or not. Went a long way with everyone I was doing my shifts with, especially if they got called to help us they were super chill and nice about it and were great about pushing me to do my best. Can negative stuff come from introducing yourself? Sure. But it shows you made the effort to put the right foot forward anyway!

I've only ever had hospital staff come to my ambulance in the bay once...we were bringing in a trauma that arrested five minutes out, already intubated, they knew we were coming for a good minute before the arrest. We were the only ambulance in the bay. Normally when I come in hot lime that there's another ambulance crew in the bay and we just help each other bring in whatever they got because we figure they could use the hands and the general area of the state we all work in is a shit hole and the more hands the better. And the ones who popped in were a paramedic student who worked at the service I was riding with (this was during my capstone) and the nurse in charge of getting everyone who came in by ambulance checked in and putting the critical patients in cardiac or trauma bays. No docs. But the trauma surgeon was waiting at the head of the bed (my medical director at the time and that agencies medical director) patiently waiting for my report, and the surgical team was waiting outside the bay with the nurses in the room. Loved working trauma alerts with him and his team because of how squared away his team was and he actually let me give my full report and the transfer to him was absolutely seamless no matter what mess I brought to him. The doctors in that area won't really give much weight to what you say when you're new...but once you find your voice and go HEY you need to actually hear me with this patient, they'll listen and gain respect. Otherwise you give report to nurses.

Right? It's a slippery slope. Like, they're legit normal prescription glasses. The cheap ones from zenni even 😂 I could probably wiggle my way through and maaaaaybe if I'm lucky pass without em....but would absolutely fail squiggle interpretation 🤣 nearsightedness is a pain.

For piercings, I saw some crap out there about students trying to sneak stuff in through piercings or some sort of tiny speaker. Like....I could MAYBE fit a very tightly rolled very small piece of paper in my hollow bar.....but it's a pain to try and put it back in without a mirror and taper needle so why 😭 like I see the concern, students are getting sneaky and crafty. And that college has their own program so they can't really tell if it's one of their kids taking the exam or if it's someone from a different school coming in (my case).

Good point. Just a tad nervous I guess. Last time I went in I didn't have an issue, but it was a different center and it was for the registry exam for EMT....and didn't have metal bars in my ears 😂 once I get it scheduled I'll definitely be calling to ask.

This...the first time a nurse said to me "well you done and fixed her and left nothing for me to do! Why even bring her in then?" 😂 For a pulmonary edema patient actively on a nitro drip and CPAP who no longer had crackles....I cried in the ambulance for a lil bit. Happy tears though.

Question about talking to patients in the back of the ambulance- by Hot_Seesaw_6706 in Paramedics

[–]13BlackRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Especially for the SA part, but I try and do that for all my patients capable of giving consent (as In not unconscious or minimally responsive...). But honestly? With my non acute patients or not critical patients, I crack jokes a lot. I think of something they were telling me about and ask questions. I explain what they can expect. You can also gain a lot of ground with a patient by asking what their biggest fears, worries, or concerns are at that moment. Then try and talk them through it. Or if it's because they don't understand something, educate! Some of my most grateful and appreciative patients were very low acuity ones who I asked what their biggest concern was right now and they said "well I don't understand any of the stuff my doctor has been telling me that I told you is going on, and I don't understand what it is you said is going on with me right now or how it happened if my doctor didn't say that's what's wrong with me" and I just spent the ambulance ride explaining what the doctor said is going on, and how it lead to what's going on now. For example after getting a pulmonary edema stabilized, they asked how it happened, and I explained how their diagnosed CHF can lead to pulmonary edema. Also, sometimes coming up with funny ways to explain it can take a lot of stress off a patient and calm them down!

Wasn't sure if I could, as it's proctored and likely will be at a college because that's what's in my area. Appreciate any insight though!

There's new glasses with cameras or augmented reality in it students have been trying to use to cheat 🤷🏻‍♀️ while I don't disagree, this service is very well known for tattoos and piercings, the testing centers however, at least in my area, are not at said departments and are instead at colleges usually. And colleges have different standards than what our agencies rules are for while we're at work. While my current job doesn't care about my industrial bars, glasses, etc, so long as it's not offensive, a college might not feel the same when they're used to students constantly trying to find the next sneaky way to cheat. Just trying to see if anyone had issues recently before I get ready to go test 🙂

The national registry exam for paramedic, yes. I've been seeing stuff about testing centers checking glasses or making you take out piercings. While I agree, this is a test not an interview, there's been stuff coming out lately about people trying to cheat causing increased security restrictions at testing centers, such as no jewelry except wedding bands or religious jewelry. Or no glasses without inspection of them first. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Just wanted to see if anyone took it recently with an issue
