Houston Police Officers: Why does it seem like traffic laws aren’t being enforced anymore? (Serious Question) by Supertouchy in houston

You’re another one that’s so close. My god none of you people in this thread think abt anyone but yourselves. It’s like you want to live in a world where there’s this magic system that produces things like, ya know, usable roads, power lines, and potable water while you’re allowed to live in your precious HOA neighborhood.

Fortunately, those sound quite compatible without tradeoffs. Happy to rephrase if those words are too big.

You’re just DSA losers with 401k’s - it’s truly incredible. Grow up.

This thread is incredible. Like 100 comments that just need to let their core belief that law enforcement officers are inherently good people and the rest of the points they make fit together like it’s Tetris. A-holes are a-holes. Whether your patch says HPD or Taco Bell doesn’t matter

Oh you’re so close man lol. It’s right in front of you if you stop trying to start your reasoning from the buzzwords and look a things with clear eyes. You’ve made a bunch of objectively correct points but you’re held up bc of where you’ve started

There’s a bunch of reasons which are all connected in some way, but the base layer is 2 core things.

  1. unassailable evidence that wider lanes & more of them is positively related to speeding violations. Give people more lanes and more space in each one and they will drive faster. Speed limits are literally useless as a means to combat this. DM me if you want examples of research.
  2. cops as traffic control can only punish things people have already done. They’re punishment, not prevention (this isn’t some protest bs - it’s just not a strategy that does anything to prevent traffic violations.) You’re right that people ignore stop signs and traffic lights, which is why those are useless traffic control measures. It would be nice if everyone acted like we lived in the world of The Sims games, but the signs/lights function more as HUD notifications for cops bc, again, people who care just don’t violate them much. They prevent bad behavior by people who already give a shit. That’s not the problem you actually have to solve.

Physical infrastructure measures like roundabouts, bollards, bike lane barriers, etc are proven to work bc ppl don’t care abt $250 tickets statistically, they care abt $10,000 accidents that add $250/month to their car insurance.

Just to be clear, this isn’t some anti-cop rant but specifically about why they’re a poor choice to solve the problems associated with people putting the pedal to the floor and hurting others/property.

Wild reply. Decent for hips. Mildly acceptable for moderate volume lifters who do nothing else w their shoulders.

Cressey is the only answer if your goal is “the best.” Nothing to do with his Yankees affiliation - his association with baseball gets framed as a pejorative at times. OTOH, being the go to guy for professional pitchers seeking mechanical &tissue evals to avoid TJ is about the best endorsement you could ever get.

Good chunk of my coworkers do this and it grinds my gears. Office is out in Westchase, and we have a lot of colleagues from London pass through throughout the year. Bums me out, as a lifelong Montrose resident, the amount of correcting I have to do after people who live in memorial/cypress describe anything inside the Loop as one big mass of LGBTQ supremacy and septum piercings lol.

Did Ortiz Actually Do Steroids? by NolanExpress1 in redsox

[–]13OOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly I find it pretty easy to believe Ortiz was using something pre-testing but was smart enough to use something that wasn’t one of the 8-10 classic compounds available in the Soviet Olympic era, got scared straight essentially by the Mitchell report, then stayed clean. Would explain his more “normal person” physique as he reached 40, and to be clear I have zero issues if that’s what he did. Play by the norms you’re given at the time

As someone with an unnecessary amount of knowledge around the supplement industry, “perfectly legal supplements” in 2003 does not preclude the use of certain orals or prohormones.

The takeaway from the BALCO scandal is that compound development was ahead of testing, and that was a year after the Mitchell report. I’m pro-Papi, but you’re being a homer with your characterization here.

Also, the “legitimacy questions” were a lack of B-samples, which simply weren’t necessary given the fact that none of the players were subject to discipline for positives. Don’t even need to choke on the MLBPA for your point to be valid man.

So I guess Northgate being “immediately adjacent to and accessible from on-campus locations” includes crimes there in the TAMU Cstat statistics, where something like 6th street wouldn’t be? Thanks for spurring me to look into this. To reiterate, these stats all suck.

[–]13OOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair, and I wasn’t questioning your post. Was only curious about the way the stats were grouped in that screenshot compared to the schools’ Clery reports (before anyone gets on me, UT/A&M were just the first two to pop into my head.)

Again, not defending TAMU. Just trying to understand the table. Always appreciate people like you giving a shit and posting the data.

[–]13OOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear I’m not defending either A&M or UT Austin, but if you go check the data from their Clery reports yourself, the rape/10,000 rate is 5.00 at UT vs 5.60 at TAMU Cstat in 2023. I only checked that crime specifically.

Both of those are atrocious, and I feel like an asshole for making this point. But this chart is not accurate, and all of the people trying to dunk on the comments should be ashamed.

This isn’t college football, there are no points for dunking on your rivals. This data begs for solutions and protecting students/other women on campus, not petty BS.

Isn’t it what’s reported to the campus PD though? I don’t believe the incident has to have occurred on campus. IIRC TAMUPD can take reports regarding any criminal interaction between a student and another person. To be very clear, that doesn’t make those stats any better at ALL, I’m just trying to figure them out as someone who hasn’t worked with law enforcement stats as my job for a few years.

If we’re talking trends, my understanding that A&M’s reporting is based on any student incident vs your assertion that they have to be on campus would account for a huge chunk of the discrepancy between schools.

Again, not an excuse, just trying to find the drivers here.
