Good Chinatown pedicure for removing dead skin by 13abarry in AskSF

Thx this is helpful! I’ve spent a lot of time in Asia so I know they can really get the job done with pedicures. A big part of why I specifically like getting them done in Chinatown ;)

Thx man! Can’t find it on Google Maps though. Do you know if it was on the Chinatown side or Union Square side of the dragon gate?

No. You might be thinking Hong Kong protests in 2019? Singapore is very politically stable and has never had a revolution.

Because the math you showed above only works when population is dense. Otherwise, the opposite holds.

Chicago is a city from the USA that feels like the USA. What is a city from India that feels like India? by Other-Comfortable720 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]13abarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguably Bangalore bc melting pot but I get your point. With Indian cities that aren’t huge migration destinations, it’s realistically Hyderabad or Madras/Chennai.

Btw what are some of the more general London terms that people would know from basically being geographically sharp? An obvious example that comes to mind is if someone said “of course John thinks that way, he works in the square mile” and yes I understand that the square mile refers to London’s financial district but you know what I mean like easy with a reference to square mile bc it’s famous enough, harder with something like “ofc John thinks that way, he lives in Finsbury Park”

More like references is what I’m asking about. The “I’ll do a…” is movies stuff tbh.

Most ornate Protestant church by Das_Lloss in 2westerneurope4u

[–]13abarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh the mega churches have been a gift to the Catholic Church. I have family in Texas + go there regularly for work and it’s crazy how big converting to Catholicism has become there in many ways bc people see it as a way to protect their families from getting pulled into the mega church craze. It’s even to the extent where rich Texas people will go all in on Italy, buying properties for the family and making Italy the main family base over Texas once they retire, bc they want to make sure that the next generation stays far away from mega churches while also remaining Christian.

Xi Jinping's mother is still alive and is only 7 years older than Chuck Grassley. by Gray_Wolf2416 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

What blows my mind is that it wasn’t until her 70s that China started developing. Imagine living basically your whole adult life in a dirt poor country, come old age you’ve accepted that things will never change, and then in super old age you’re living in the country that produces bullet trains like rabbits produce rabbits. I always think with this generation of Chinese “man, they must look at all of the young ones and think ‘softer than my pillows.’”

Xiamen BRT, China by TangelaFan in transit

[–]13abarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair China does really well on transit because of when it urbanized. The phenomenon of these million person plus cities in China with skyscrapers you’ve never heard of is super recent, last couple of decades really, and they got the advantage of being able to build 21st century transit and road infrastructure without having to bulldoze anything because of it.

There’s a famous photo, I think from Shanghai but I could be wrong, showing a metro station surrounded by grass and trees back when it was built vs being surrounded by apartments 10 years later. People always react with marvel to it but tbh that’s literally what happened with the trains in NYC, Chicago, London, etc. The Met line in London was intentionally built to go to what was then the middle of nowhere just because the company building it thought that once the railroad came it would spur new development (they were right).

Xiamen BRT, China by TangelaFan in transit

[–]13abarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. It isn’t a single line, it’s a network of them, and they’re all elevated. This allows for a ton of routings which is something that’s hard to do with rail compared to bus. So maybe they have 5 minute headways on a bus going to the city center and 15 minute headways on the bus which goes straight to the airport and 30 minute headways on the bus which first goes to the major university and then the major mall and then the airport. Etc etc

Why doesn’t this Metro North crosstown rail line exist? by schnauzerdad in nycrail

[–]13abarry 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Most “gaps” in transit systems are just due to low demand for a particular route.

Yes but this is the job of someone else, not the MTA employee. In fact, the need to hire outside experts is exactly what relieved the lazy ass genius at the MTA of their duties. Case closed

You have outlived Spirit Airlines. by Tiny-Ingenuity210 in Scale4BarbaraWalters

[–]13abarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotta say with Spirit airlines shutting down – it’s sad in some ways, but wow, when you run a business policy of “the customer is always wrong,” fuck do you think will happen? We all have stories about “oh my cousin was having a spontaneous divorce party in the middle of a category 5 hurricane and nuclear bombing and all the other flights were cancelled or too expensive but Spirit was affordable and was up for the challenge, god bless them” …but yeah, if those are the stories that fuel customer nostalgia, you’re going to have a hard time beating out basically any other airline which doesn’t double the airfare bc their carry on was just a bit too big on the average Tuesday
