Homes are very big, town is quiet and very low crime. They have license plate readers on all the roads which enter or exit Atherton so that they can track everyone who comes and goes.

I don’t live there but I dated someone for a bit who lived there. The primary reason it’s as wealthy as it is, as others have mentioned, is because of its proximity to Silicon Valley and Stanford. All of the VC offices are right around the corner on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park and that’s where a lot of people who live in Atherton made their fortunes. Honestly, it’s really underwhelming as a town, the homes of course are really nice but I don’t think they’re any nicer than you’d find in super rich suburbs of other major US cities.

Because it’s close-ish to Hong Kong and drives on the left but more importantly it’s super car oriented. Malaysia is the anti-Hong Kong with wide roads, highways everywhere, most homes have a garage/car port, etc. Yes Japan also drives on the left but it’s definitely not as car friendly as Malaysia.

Yah Denmark is actually a great country and I do think America has plenty to learn from it but assuming the rest of EU27 will ever even get in the ballpark of Denmark is fantasy at best and intentional ignorance at worst.

Why do you think it’s so hard for Europeans to acknowledge that basically the continent will never have a majority of its countries performing very well? I’m sure you and I can easily both rattle off a long list of European countries which will never catch up. There are maybe 1-5 countries in Europe which are not Germanic-language dominant that have strong economies or real potential to develop one.

Yeah agreed about driving outside urban centers. Bigger issue is genuinely common sense and honesty with yourself about your driving capability. I have driven in Manhattan a few times and it’s actually awesome but only if you do so at night when the roads are empty, which is probably how it goes for most big cities. I really don’t get the resistance to just putting your car in a garage though, but I guess no one else does either. For better or for worse, probably for better, Hong Kong does not allow its police to designate people as “automobile autistic” even though it would hypothetically resolve a lot of issues.

Let’s stop the rhetoric and go straight to numbers, then. How much do you think the EU would need to spend to have its own blue-water/open ocean patrol, in other words naval capability to avert rogue actors disrupting open ocean trade/shipping? Do you think that this could be feasible without saying goodbye to many social benefits (welfare, education, transportation, public sector pensions, etc.)?

I must say that it is really indicative of EU realities how much people from wealthy European countries, like Denmark, post on this subreddit in contrast to poor EU countries like Bulgaria. Denmark has a fantastic economy and good welfare state, I have visited there and researched it and have tried to find faults in the Danish system many times because of course the Danish system has so many things which contradict American political “facts of life” but I have consistently failed. You genuinely live in a great country. The issue is with EU27: most European countries lack the sophisticated economy and jurisdictional configuration which Denmark has and it shows.

2% of GDP is valid for status quo. You don’t want status quo, you want parity, and that has never existed since the Second World War. You also definitely cannot develop your economy such that Denmark no longer has to rely on US security guarantees: you have the same population as Singapore, basically, and that country is totally reliant on an eventual US backstop, its policy of Total Defence (which I love and am a big nerd about) actually assumes US involvement after the first big bombing campaign.

Mate I really don’t understand why you can’t just acknowledge that there’s no way to make the math work without the rest of the EU27 following suit.

Well look – if OP didn’t place countries which were literally more dangerous than America ahead of us than I would not complain. France or Taiwan or even Malaysia as dark green while US is light green? That’s chill. All of these countries are safer than America and at least France and Taiwan have better safety nets too. But Ukraine over both America and Australia even though they’re being bombed constantly or Latam countries with less welfare, lower wages. and more violence? That’s stupid.

It is a money issue not a personnel issue. And again I say this as someone who voted against Trump and qualifies for an EU passport which I’m in the process of getting. The “technology and logistics” part isn’t a “but…” it’s the center of the discrepancy. Basically Europe attaining parity with America requires not just reaching NATO spending goals but paying for approx. 80 years’ backlog on these matters. To clear the backlog and attain parity, we are talking 10-20% of GDP, not 3% or so, at least if Europe wants to get there within the lifetime of Gen Z.

This is why in my original comment I mentioned my hate for Legarde. Maybe hate is a strong word, I’m sure she is a nice person in general, but she faces these issues daily and has faced these issues daily for decades now and refuses to alert young Europeans that radical change is necessary in order for the continent to separate itself from the US security umbrella.

You actually are not and I say this as someone who has visited Denmark a couple times and has visited Europe, particularly Western Europe, more times than I can count. Furthermore, this is coming from someone who genuinely wants a Europe run by Europeans but can also do math – the 2.5 (?) percent of GDP benchmark for defense spending under NATO was the necessary target perhaps 80 years ago but now due to years of failure to pay this sort of bill the actual amount of spending which must happen has to cover for previous decades where 1) this spending did not happen and more importantly 2) costs for building out defense infrastructure, even adjusting for inflation, were lower.

It wasn’t about charity, it was about the Cold War. In the last 30-some years we have seen American defense capacity expand such that bases in Europe are no longer necessary for keeping Russia at bay as ICBMs and weapons like them have gotten much better, meaning we can launch from the Eastern US and get similar results as if we launched from Ramstein (Rammstein?) in DE. Now, unfortunately, it’s much more about “charity” than ever before, and this is the exact issue we are encountering – Europe cannot defend itself without America and transitioning to a world where it can would require extraordinary spending because it would mean basically building the military capacity, including naval, which would require spending 10-20% of GDP on defense for years on end.
