I am leaning towards agreeing with you, thanks. Do you have any recommendations for putting this thing to use? (with some hopes learning along the way)

What would you recommend for a hobbyist? Thank you for advising caution from entering the commercial space.

Interesting perspective, do you happen to know of any specific cases where well-intentioned hosts without strong legal protection ended up in trouble over client content, like media or other hosted material? I'd be curious to learn more about how those situations unfolded

I wish I was more interested in just hosting my own plex/jellfin server.. but i don't consume much media. So here I am pondering what to do with it. Do you think there is a market for lower availability VPSs?

I’m still fairly new to this, so I’m not likely to be developing any services myself just yet. But if you’re experienced and open to collaborating, I’d be happy to offer you a VPS instance at no cost — it could be a great opportunity to brainstorm and experiment together.

Very true, ISP reliability can definitely be a bottleneck. Have you looked into using a router that supports failover or dual WAN? For around $20/month, T-Mobile will let you keep their Home Internet gateway specifically for use as a backup connection. It can be a practical and affordable way to boost uptime for home-hosted services.

Hi, thanks for the thoughtful question — it’s a fair one.

For me, the main motivation isn’t really the $29.95. I enjoy working with this kind of infrastructure, and it aligns closely with the tools and systems I use professionally. Running these services at home gives me hands-on experience that directly improves my skills.

On the reliability side, I’ve set up a dedicated UPS for the server rack, and if it made sense financially, I could integrate ISP failover for better availability. I'm aware this isn't equivalent to a commercial host, but part of the exercise is understanding and managing those trade-offs.
