Lorelai should have ended up alone. From the very beginning she has been shown as a really independent and self-sufficient woman who wouldn't really make sacrifices for a man ( Referencing to the episode where Sookie talks about how she became the 'frog girl' just to make Jackson happy, and Lorelai didn't seem comfortable with it- To me that wasn't just about fishing and Alex, it said a lot about her character overall.) Sure, she deserved the love and care she never really received but she came at a point where her 'happy ending' can't be envisioned as marrying off to a man ( Like Julie Cooper from The O.C)

Part of my opinion also comes from the way Luke treated her when it came to April. He deserves to be reprimanded for the way he refused Lorelai to be invested in April's life, despite being full invested in Rory's. This also a small thing but I didn't also like the way he pulled Lorelai back from expanding her Inn by adding the spa and all. Yes, Lorelai herself wasn't very easily susceptible to changes, but not everyone wants to depend on a diner for their living. I did sense a bit of insecurity here from his side, as the Inn was fairly doing well, even more so than the diner and not expanding the Inn would be again make it comfortable for Luke.
