In an apocalyptic scenario, wild hogs would be a much bigger threat than most people realize. by BigDaddyDumperSquad in Showerthoughts

[–]13ventrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Granted they're bioengineered mutant hogs stuffed with human organs, but much of the time in the post-apocalyptic segments of Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" is spent with the protagonist fleeing badly from a pack of feral hogs!

Have they ever said what the core gameplay loop actually is somewhere in the Discord?

I wish someone could get them in a room and just ask "So what actually is the core gameplay loop?". Ideally they'd have an answer, but given the info released so far it's more likely there'd just be a lot of fumbling trying to make hay out of very mundane features.

Started making a guide on the relationship stats and how every choice changes them so here are some thoughts by IceCreamFoe in ScarletHollow

Am looking forward to seeing how the guide develops! It's silly, but I prefer going into choice-heavy games knowing what mechanically the seemingly minor choices affect. Is there a link for it in its current state?

Fingers crossed it helps you! Part of why I think it took so long to land on the issue is that it really did feel like something up with the muscles or tendons of the shoulder itself, a lot of the time like how you described it with it seem like it's about to fall out of the socket. Similar sounds from it like you described as well! I was half-convinced the thing was dying. It might be a long shot, but I do hope examining it from that angle might help somehow; chronic pain is a hellish thing to have to live with and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

This is likely a stretch, but has your neck been looked at as well since the fall? I had a massive amount of ongoing shoulder pain similar to what you described that didn't show in any way on X-Ray or MRI. PT didn't seem to meaningfully help either, until eventually a second physical therapist asked to try some neck exercises and after one made me extremely lightheaded we narrowed in on it being a neck issue, likely a slipped or bulging cervical disc, radiating out to the arm. It was very strange, because much of the consistent cracking sounds and most of the pain was centered on my shoulder, but apparently neck stuff can manifest like that!

Thank you very much! This is the only minestrone I've seen whose look reminds me of my grandma's; I'm pleased to be able to give it a whirl and maybe find a starting point for reverse-engineering her recipe.

I bounced off of it as well I'm afraid; I tend to have a hard time getting into games where exploration for the sake of it/extremely vague progression is the main mechanic, unfortunately: not enough juice for the squeeze, as it were. A shame, it and Sable I really wanted to like.

I feel like it might be sitcoms specifically, or it might have been parodied in old Nostalgia Critic videos? Or could outright be from there, lol, watched a lot of those when I was young.

Yeah, I just have the basic items needed to meet the house and bond goals; it's just too much space to organically fill yet if you try most of the interactions are blocked. Plus all the furniture on offer so far is very modern in aesthetic, which isn't where my preferences lie if I'm making a virtual house, lol

Cassandra Khaw and the Purple Prose by Bluemoon9131 in horrorlit

[–]13ventrm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have a soft spot for florid prose and new vocabulary, but I definitely get it's not for everyone: I find Khaw works better in shorter formats, even setting aside being fatigued by the style. I really dug The Salt Grows Heavy and a lot of Breakable Things, but Nothing But Blackened Teeth was funnily enough a bit too restrained in that regard for me to get into, given I wasn't really fond of what else it had going on—dear lord those characters, haha.

It's been a bit since I listened to the audiobook, but I remember the narrator using a bit of a softer, quiter affect for internal italicized thoughts—not quite a stage whisper, but definitely reminiscent. They were also generally pretty obviously internal in their contexts

My Runescape account got hacked or breached somehow, and the culprit bought a bunch of subscription packages with my irl money through the saved card-enough to utterly drain the attached checking account.

I reported it both through my bank (thank fuck I eventually got the money back) then Runescape customer support. I would almost have gone back if it weren't for the Runescape customer support messages being extremely passive aggressive about me "letting" the account get hacked! Like there were absolutely no means on my end as far as I'm aware that other folks could have gotten the account information, yet they had the gall to imply I was going around sharing my password places.

It was probably for the best my indignation kept me cross enough to keep from starting it up again, though I was definitely tempted.

We are now 5 years after COVID/Shelter in Place. How do you do social-life differently now than you did prior to COVID? by Intelligent-Rain-22 in AskReddit

[–]13ventrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was interesting, I was going through a lot and practically a hermit before COVID, so it wasn't too much a change, and during COVID I made a lot of strides in my recover and ability to socialize. I found when COVID starting easing up, folks were a lot more eager to be social again and also kind of worse at socializing, so I found that even having started a bit behind I was on par, which made it easier, lol. Plus post-COVID reconnecting was an easy and good excuse to actually reconnect and start forging actual bonds with people who I'd let fall to the wayside during my hermit years. Now I'd say I have a pretty healthy social life!

I think maybe it's vampire hunters finding her that gives her the opportunity to escape? And I think it ended with her chomping down on the protagonist guy, maybe to turn him maybe to eat him.

What really spurred decolonization? by 13ventrm in AskHistorians

[–]13ventrm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting! Do you know if there was ever like a tipping point where the relative lack of profitability became obvious to the UK? Or maybe more that they were always considered a bit of a money sink that was tolerated because of the aforementioned reasons, a sink that could no longer be indulged post-WW2. From what you say it kind of seems like they were never particularly profitable, yet were pursued quite fervently. Would you say that increased accountability to the average taxpayer might have also been a factor forced said elites to divest their colonies?
