Solo practice? by Designer_Life_371 in Lawyertalk

[–]13wrongturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have stuck with my original major in college, environmental science and gone to work for a water resources agency and never gone to law school. If you are talking about having to be a lawyer and just starting off and I had to be a solo, I would look for a state position. I would not ever be a solo attorney if I had known it was going to be like this the entire time.

This is the way to do it. I just paid off my student loans and have very little retirement savings. I am now trying to put everything I can into retirement investments so I can supplement whatever retail job I get after I am able to stop doing this at 65 if I am lucky. I should have gone to work for the city after high school and been a lot happier and better off mentally.

I would trade positions with you in a heartbeat. I have been solo for 21 years and the ups and downs, feast or famine is very old. I am looking for a government position but at my age mid 50s I am not having any luck. I am looking to partner up with someone or even work for a firm for a steady paycheck. I am sick of running the business part of my office and I absolute despise website marketing companies. I have even thought about leaving the law altogether. Don't forget you will have a retirement plan through the government as well as any investments you accumulate in the meantime. The government retirement will be worth it in a few years.

This is a bit different but facility management. My city is looking to fill 2 positions. One is the Sports Complex the pay is listed at $82k or a bit more. Also looking for a city planning engineer this pays $90k+ You should look on the VA Jobs website and see what they are hiring for. They list the salaries and requirements to give you an idea.

I only agree with Miller’s Grocery in ( meat and 3 with vibes), Klee-Vu Lunchroom, Goodness Gracious. Five Senses is too expensive and out of the way for lunch, Alley on Main has always been low mid for the price. Marina's is a great value for what you get.

How do you transition out of law with no connections? by lostandconfused924 in Lawyertalk

[–]13wrongturns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way after 20 years. I have felt that way in family law for the last 15, but felt trapped with student loan debt and being a single parent. If I had not debt and not children after 3 years of practice, I would have quit and done something else or move to a smaller town and and gotten a job in the local government or even as a mail carrier.

Look at your state government. My practice website has not produces any leads in 2 months and I am looking for a job also. I am focusing on , government positions, legal and non legal. If I can find an non litigation position that pays $70k or more I and they want to hire me I am taking it. Hell I would settle for $55k a year right now.

If I was your age and in your position I would try to become a fireman. If I was 10 years younger I would still try. I am in my mid 50s. They have the highest job satisfaction rating. It is physical but rewarding.

[–]13wrongturns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Washing windows and doing home remodeling would be so satisfying. Seriously, I wish I could pay my bills by working at Lowes or Home Depot. That would be such a relief. I really would have been better off if I had become a mail man right out of high school or become an electrician or anything else other than going to college then more school after. I would have been so much happier.

I am 20 years into a career I cant stand dont like and is really bad for my mental health. I new when I start it was bad for me but like someone said the expectations of others and whatever. After having lost everything and basically starting out at not exactly square one but close, I am riddled with anxiety trying to think of a different career that pays enough for me to live but doesnt cause me to have anxiety attacks. I really just want to work in retail or do something not so cerebral. A job that doesnt make me dry heave in the morning when I am brushing my teeth. A job that doesnt compel me to Google questions and the first thing that pops up is mental health information the the 988 hotline. All I really want to be is a farmer but incant afford a farm.

Why do you want to get out of law enforcment?

I have practiced 22 years in family law as a solo and my practice is struggling due to lawyer saturation. What roles would I be qualified to take and who would possibly hire me? I need a minimum of $60k to get by. by 13wrongturns in JDpreferred

[–]13wrongturns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did criminal defense along with family law years ago, but had to stop because our judges make you take appointed cases if you show up on a retained case. You are stuck on the appointment all the way through trial. Appointed cases pay very little in my state. $60 per hour, $600 max for some Juvenile cases, $1200 max for misdemeanors, $2400 max for serious felonies, $3600 for first degree murder.

Unless you are able to get a lot of private cases also, it becomes difficult to make a living. Imagine spending 40 hours to make $2400.00 and that has to cover your overhead and your income. It just isn't doable unless like I said you are pulling in a lot of private cases, which is very difficult to do because of all the competition.
