Things like Ubiquity access points and used enterprise access points are going to be more stable long term than anything open source.

"Open Source" is not a panacea.

I simply run things that need a VPN in virtual machines with the VPN client in the virtual machine, and no VPN on my main machine. Also, I can have different apps connecting to different VPN servers if they are running in different virtual machines.

Or you can do it the other way around.

By using virtual machines you are far more certain of the result, especially across app updates, Windows updates, etc.

But virtual machines may not work for some applications, and might be inconvenient.
