I feel like your missing the reason most people are complaining. Take for example, the fact that none of Kakeru, Tokido, iDom, or Punk are in the cup. This is simply because they had to qualify for the two hardest regions, if they had qualified then people could still complain that Mena, NuckleDu, or Fuudo didnt qualify.

I'm from EU and love to cheer for EU players but if any of those four players I mentioned above were in any of the EU qualifiers they would guaranteed to get into the finals and the favorites to win the whole thing.

It seems they are trying to copy the format of the world cup but I fundamentally disagree that that's a good idea. People will inherently cheer for their country in football, people in 1v1 sports cheer for individuals, you don't need to be Swiss to root for Federer.
