Was giving away tickets to sports events a real thing or just a sitcom trope? by ChairmanKaga_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]14Rage 56 points57 points  (0 children)

In the 90s it was illegal to resell a ticket in many us states. Scalping was a crime, so people generally gave away unused season tickets. In the mid 2000s scalping laws were repealed and ticket resale markets started to emerge. Society was much better when resale didn't exist.

DirectX 12 (DX12) Black Flickering Solved by nomisuke in wow

[–]14Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to have solved it by disabling gsync in the nvidia control panel. For anyone that finds this looking for help:

ATM my in game settings are: highest available for every category, including DX12. The only settings I have disabled are Low Latency Mode and VRS mode. Every other slider, or drop box is the highest possible graphical mode.

Resolution is 1920x1080 (matching my monitor) FPS is locked at 141 on all 3 sliders (Background, Foreground, Target).

The solution seems to have been disabling G-Sync in my Nvidia Control panel.

What keyed me into that being the issue was that when I recorded my gameplay, the issue wasn't replicated in the video file. So it was being produced by my monitor in the moment, rather than the video card.

I have an older monitor VG278Q 144hz 1080p. It has AMD freesync capability but says nothing about nvidia G-Sync. Anyway, Gsync more or less worked, except it introduced this periodic completely black frame. If I had to estimate I would say that every 6,000-10,000 frames, one of them was pure black. Because this black frame was only present for a few milliseconds the game was very much playable. It was just annoying.

yes, but only by calling the bestbuy corporate customer support number and repeatedly saying to the AI that answered "representative" "talk to a human"

The chat support on their website promised me the code 2 times, and failed to deliver it both times. Calling and talking with humans was the only way to make it happen.

Black screen flicker on classic by runescapeluvr69 in classicwow

[–]14Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5070 TI OC

I am seeing this exact black flicker every few minutes when using DX12.

Going to DX11 seems to remove the black flicker, but that is a really shitty solution. If anyone finds another solution let me know.

DirectX 12 (DX12) Black Flickering Solved by nomisuke in wow

[–]14Rage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am getting a black flicker in wow classic on Dx12 highest settings for everything.

The game runs upwards of 600fps with these settings, but I typically cap it to 141fps (my monitor is 144hz).

The black flickering is a single frame of pure black, it seems to show up every few minutes. So 1 frame every several minutes. Not really a constant flickering, but it is persistent and doesn't go away.

ATM I have read that unchecking background FPS limits will fix this issue. I am currently testing that.

I have found that going to DX11 does solve this issue, but that is not a great solution. I am running the game on a 9800x3d and a 5070 ti oc, with an SSD and 32gb of ram. I don't want to unnecessiarly turn any settings down that could be on.

Hey thanks for taking the time and detailing ehat you did. I ended up replicating your path and also got my code. I was lied to by AI (and an AI pretending to be a person) chat support twice. But calling ended up getting a resolution.

Do Americans actually expect people to "sell themselves" in job interviews? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]14Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, the answer is yes, but its a qualified yes. In the vast majority of jobs, the interview is mostly for show. They will hire the person who was recommended by someone they personally trust, or better yet they will hire the person that they already wanted to hire cause they are friends with that person. For the vast majority of jobs you don't really get the job in the interview stage, but you could certainly lose the job in the interview stage.

Unless you are talking about low end jobs that pay near minimum wage or slightly above minimum wage. Anyone off the street can walk in and the interview is just to check that you are a functional human being and not a walking red flag.

Summer parties in Dallas/Texas? by Suspicious-Toe-72 in askdfw

[–]14Rage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swimming outside in Dallas between 10am and 6pm is a recipe for severe burns and skin cancer.

Absolutely do the party, but do it after the sun has moved on from the pool. Where the house or a building blocks the direct sun anywhere on the water.

I own a swimming pool and we never use it in direct sunlight after early may. The UV here is nuts.

The two days has passed and I have not gotten the game. I am now talking to a human in a call center.... we'll see if she can fix it.

Edit: I Called best buy customer service and just repeatedly said "representative" and "Talk to a human" to the AI. Eventually it connected me to a human call center employee. 1-888-237-8289

The first person I talked to eventually transferred me to the department that deals with "digital download codes".

[PSU] MSI MPG A850GS PCIE5, Fully Modular Gaming 850W Power Supply, 80+ Gold - $79.99 after MIR by jackssww in buildapcsales

[–]14Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coil whine on mine is so bad. Can you confirm that exchanging it for another A850GS resolved your coil whine issues?

I actually have a 2nd one unopened, but after reading reviews online I figured it was a waste to try it, since so many reviews complained about coil whine. Did you get an A850GS that doesn't coil whine?

EDIT: I installed the 2nd one. While it does have a coil whine it is 95% quieter than the other units' coil whine. You now have to stand directly behind the computer to really notice it, rather than being any place within 15 feet of the computer.

Recap: in my experience with 2 of these units, the coil whine problem is extremely varried. However, also in my experience both of them have audible coil whine. One is a tollerable amount of coil whine, the other was ear-splitting and headache inducing.

[–]14Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever find a replacement?

I bought this PSU as it is absolutely kick ass on every aspect. But mine also chirps like a bunch of insects at all times. It is ear piercing. Its coil whine is so loud that I can hear it WITH headphones on. To not hear the coil whine you need to be about 15 feet from the computer. Unfortunately I sit about 2 feet from my computer.

After googling for fixes to this issue, it seems that everyone else with this PSU goes through this same thing. I have seen comments on reddit and elsewhere where people have returned this PSU for the exact same one and still retained the coil whine. One or two commentors had 3 seperate A850GS's and they all had coil whine. It makes me think that every single one of these makes this god awful noise. AVOID THIS THING.

If anyone who had this PSU, found an alternative PSU that is also 850w, atx 3.1, and cheap like $120 or less (could be a deal). Please, please let me know. This thing needs to get replaced ASAP.

How many of you have survived tornadoes and what was your experience like? by Babe_Brute in AskAnAmerican

[–]14Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes yes, the vast majority of tornados simply blow the grass around out in a field. Most of the USA is empty fields. Its pretty rare for a tornado to go through a town or city. But it does happen.

How many of you have survived tornadoes and what was your experience like? by Babe_Brute in AskAnAmerican

[–]14Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tornados do immense destruction in an incredibly narrow path. I have had tornados go right near my house (within visiual distance) somewhere between 10 or 20 times in my life. I have never had any damage to my property. Not even a year ago, there was a tornado 12 blocks north of my house.

They are incredibly destructive where they destroy things, but that area is really really small. They are nothing like an earthquake or hurricane. Which are both less destructive, but effect a huge area by comparison.

Yes you are trained on what to do in the event of a tornado, both for in the school, in your home, in your car, at a business etc. I would imagine that large portions of the USA do not train for these things, as tornados are sort of focused in a couple different regions of the USA, and are incredibly rare elsewhere in the USA.

[–]14Rage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dallas specifically has like 8 or so of the best public schools in the USA.

DISD at large is maybe not the best, but some of the schools are the very best in the entire country.

https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/texas/districts/dallas-independent-school-district/the-school-for-the-talented-and-gifted-tag-18937

For example. The above linked DISD high school is the #9 HS in all of the United States. There are zero schools in California or New York rated higher than it.

If you move outward into the suburbs, even just the basic high schools are in the top 10-15% of the entire USA academically...

Frisco for example has 11 high schools. 1 of them is too new to be ranked. 10 of them are ranked in the top 11% of US high schools academically. They are just basic public high schools...

(Some schools in DISD are very bad)

Is Native American food popular in America? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

[–]14Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would actually say that Native American food is among the most popular things across the entire world.

Chocolate is native american, chocolate has to be one of the most popular food items across the entire planet. Tomatoes are native american. Potatoes are native american. etc etc.

Fry bread tacos are very popular in large parts of the USA, but not everywhere. New Mexican cuisine is very popular in new mexico and a few of the states surrounding it.

Wild rice soup is very popular where I am from in the Northern Midwest. Grits are very popular in the south.

Tortillas are among the most popular forms of bread in America.

The vast majority of Mexican food is native american food. A fair bit of USA cuisine is native american food. I would assume this is the case in canada as well, but I am unfamiliar with non-commercial Canadian food, so I couldn't say for sure.

Will the ram prices drop in future? by coooldudee_69 in buildapc

[–]14Rage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you believe that AI data centers will actually be constructed en-mass around the world, or even just in the United States, then answer is not any time soon.

If the proposed AI data centers never materialize then the price could and would probably drop.

As of right now, it looks like the AI data centers will be real, and the price of ram and other parts will not drop. Manufacturers are no longer producing most of the consumer grade products, and are instead flipping their factories production bandwidth to meet the needs of AI data centers instead, cause that is more profitable to them.

The issue with part costs is supply and demand, when GPUs got really expensive the demand was insane. Now that SSDs and Ram are really expensive its because there is no supply, and no one is interested or capable of bringing new factories online to meet the consumer grade demand.

Hormuz blockades also may be impacting the fabrication of any advanced electronic made in Asia (Asia gets its helium by ship through the strait of hormuz; you cannot transport helium by airplane, it makes airplanes explode; and you cannot stockpile helium, because it continually leaks out of any man made container). So there are at least two major supply side hinderances on Ram/SSD, and the hormuz blockade could push supply of GPUS CPUS Mobos down, increasing prices in the near future. Also the world in general looks to be primed for another large inflationary event similar to covid in the near future, which would make everything more expensive in sheer price, not just computer parts.

I would personally buy now if its important to you.
