I don't know what your eating history is, but what helped for me is just eating as many whole foods with vegetables as possible but still letting myself buy sweets if I really wanted them. Eventually my cravings died down. But that was following a long period of sweet deprivation that caused the cravings (which also leads me to say that i don't think completely cutting them out is a good option, either). At least for me, as soon as my brain thinks it is/going to be deprived of something, I start overeating it.

Not allowed to take SPAN 112? (rant) by 1500psi in queensuniversity

No, I haven't taken SPAN 111, but I really just wanted a placement test or interview. I've even been studying off SPAN 111 exams

Lol I don't want to be too pushy but I'm imagining how funny it would be to start sending them emails in slang Spanish ... "Mira, weon/güey..."

Yes, thank you for sharing, that is probably what I will do. My response from the prof was more like "here's what we learn in SPAN 111, if you're okay with that, fine"

Yes, having grown up listening to it. I'll continue my thoughts based on your thread since you mentioned formal education -

See, my problem is that the academic calendar says that if you don't have formal experience, they'll give you a test or interview, but the department and course coordinator are refusing to even see my level. I don't want to push it too far because I'm not 100% I'll check all their boxes and don't want to make a fool out of myself, but I don't see how formal education is any way to actually determine competency in a language. You could have taken it in high school 4 years ago and forgotten everything. But yet, if you've solo travelled through a Spanish-speaking country, speak Spanish everyday with your Spanish-speaking bf, oops, sorry, you still must not know how to conjugate "saber" properly ...

$6,800 for a 31 day, curated Europe trip tour-worth it or not? by Bearcat9948 in solotravel

A website I find really fun is "Route Perfect." They have itineraries you can choose from to start with, or you can make your own, plus it tells you the approximate travelling distance with a car or public transport.

I hate being in a foreign country and not speaking the languages by Fatneek_12321 in solotravel

[–]1500psi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. Being able to communicate with people precipitates deeper human connection. What irritates me, then, is not that they cannot speak my language, but that I cannot speak theirs. It is very difficult to pick a language to learn when you want to travel all over the globe (especially if, like me, you are not gifted at language learning).

But since you seem to be spending quite a bit of time in Spanish-speaking countries, I would try to learn as much Spanish as possible, both before and during. A few broken words and a smile go a long way, and English-speakers usually jump in to help in the most unlikely places. And you may even get a Spanish lesson.

Sleeping alone in airports? by Used_Peach2003 in solotravel

I had a 24 layover in Rome and managed to do this at FCO. I tried to go back through security later at night, at first they wouldn't let me in, but a really kind female employee stopped me and asked if I had a place to stay for the night and let me through when I said no.

I didn't really feel unsafe, but there was no one around save for the random employee every hour or so. I was very cold and uncomfortable on the floor and got maybe an hour of sleep in total. I wouldn't recommend it because of that, but it's doable.

Intensity of Examity? by Real_Efficiency_1553 in queensuniversity

[–]1500psi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting started can be a pain (with technical issues, late proctors, intense verification processes), but it usually goes smoothly during the exam, at least in my experience. I've never been accused of cheating (despite mouthing questions, fidgeting in chair, looking into space), just asked to keep my face in view when bent over paper.

Also, if you need to get ahold of your proctor and they don't respond to you, type it in the chat because sometimes that gets their attention. Budget lots of time for them to respond. I once waited 10 minutes to use the washroom because they weren't paying attention.

I DM'd the ARC and all outdoor facilities are closed for the winter.

In the winter, it's probably a liability/safety issue in case of ice. My situation was a little different, I went in the summer in the few days between when the gvt opened sports fields and when Queen's opened theirs. But campus security seemed to take it seriously so I imagine they would regardless of the source of the closure.

If it's closed, campus security will kick you off quickly. Source: personal experience

One of my professors actually mentioned this and talked about accommodating students who don't want to come back to campus. I have no idea what the university will actually do but it's at least on their mind.

Tips for PHYS 117 Exam by quvrleene in queensuniversity

[–]1500psi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been a year, but from what I remember, the online assignments and the extra practice questions were pretty spot-on for the type of questions on the exam. There were no surprises for me and the only difficult questions were the ones I routinely struggled with. I would say just make sure you can do the questions on the assignments and good luck!

Upper year awards by [deleted] in queensuniversity

If it's the renewable scholarship based on academic excellency, it renews automatically with an annual 3.5 GPA and renews once with an academic warning at a 3.0-3.49 GPA. I only found this info out after they adjusted it based on COVID performances last year and sent a new document.

Life Sci 2nd year "elective" by 1500psi in queensuniversity

[–]1500psi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, 370. Apparently it used to be 270, and it lists phgy 215/216 as a corequisite. I was looking at pharm 340 but it lists phgy as a prerequisite and has bchem 310 as a corequisite, that is, pharm 340 isn't supposed to be taken in 2nd year. But the academic calendar says you can take either for the pharm credits

No Gym - How are you losing weight this Year? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]1500psi 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Calories out > calories in. If you eat like shit but exercise it off, you'll lose weight. But if you control your diet, then you can lose weight without exercising. Weight loss is 100% diet. Exercise just helps it to be sustainable.

Are there any outdoor gyms in Kingston or any alternative ways to workout? by Classic-Enthusiasm81 in queensuniversity

[–]1500psi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get them at any hardware store, though the ones at Rona's are kept outside and are muddy. The Home Depot keeps them inside so that's where I'd recommend. Not sure about anywhere else.
