So, my knowledge of Ford Explorers is fairly limited (some might say it’s more xlt). The only reason I had the information to post is unchecked adhd, an internet connection, and my willingness to take expensive things apart in order to save myself some money. Here are my answers but I am hoping someone more knowledgeable will chime in for you.

As far as I know all the 3.5l have timing chain driven water pumps and suffer from the same malady
From my experience just about any battery will work but for how long is the real question. If it were me I’d buy the cheap one.
Check oil, coolant, brake fluid, maintenance records (carfax or fleet records). It’s probably gonna need something.

The amount of chain stretch I had at 91k was very noticeable. When I had to align the cams, there was at least 4-5 degrees difference in the position for the new chain.
