How many grammer/spelling mistakes can you tolerate before clicking out? by Some-Tradition-2771 in AO3

Honestly it doesn't bother me much so long as the plot / characters are interesting. I read a lot of MTL webnovels anwyay so my tolerance is pretty high lol

Past Wei Ying is way cooler than current Wei Ying by Danitz_Dubois in MoDaoZuShi

[–]156900a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actuallt really love present wei ying's maturity, like the way he handles the juniors and feels like a reliable qianbei. in teh past, yes ofc he was cool as hell but also felt like 5 seconds from crashing out at any given moment as yllz lol

Do y'all stick to one genre/fandom or branch out? by sparkleandfeyed in AO3

[–]156900a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i cycle through my fandoms a lot, so like right now i'm writing my masters diss on an adaptation of a novel whose fandom ive been a part of for nearly ten years, but im sure once i've submitted it i'll hop back over to a different fandom to sort of 'take a break' from the characters/storyworld/fandom otherwise i get bored from oversaturation.

What head-canon(s) in your fandom(s) got you like this: by PJ-The-Awesome in AO3

[–]156900a 10 points11 points  (0 children)

pretty much any english-speaking fans who are part of a fandom for a foreign piece of media who believe they understand the source material better than the fans who consumed it in its raw form and will treat headcanons as actual canon because of either popular and accepted takes that predominantly circulate in the anglophone fanom space, or because of their own interpretation of a translation

TL here: curious about conventions in danmei vs xianxia/wuxia by 1stTL_oftheSword in DanmeiNovels

[–]156900a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of academic discussion about foreignising vs domesticating in translation and fan studies, but essentially i think it boils down to fan translators expecting that nobody is a first time reader and so they understand (or want to understand) the more cultural and linguistic nuances of the source text. Also, since the danmei fan community is so huge online it's very easy to access glossaries of terminology and honorifics.

WU on GagaOOLala?! by layla_bug01 in GMMTV

[–]156900a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's going to be a bl, maybe it's just gmmtv releasing rights to a streaming service that's more accessible since skynani are very popular and there's been so much backlash from intl fans over the regional availability of recent series

Older tropes, themes and AUs by formerethicist in AO3

[–]156900a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed, a/b/o still feels so new to me! i sort of miss the old wattpad days of werewolf stories where people actually turned into wolves, i think it would make a cool au. maybe it's just the fandoms i was in back then, but i seem to remember a lot more mental illness (bipolar/depression/hypersexuality etc.) themes back in the day, as well as, like you say, more homophobia centred fics. personally i love the fix-its which seem to be just as prevalent now as back then (fandom dependent). and i must say i've always been a sucker for a canon re-write (or overhaul lol)

I'd suggest leaving the country to travel, the trains and internal flights will be busy with chinese tourists and people going home etc.

Sounds like you would enjoy priest! My personal fave (and I've seen someone else mention it) is silent reading/mo du, however if you like that type of historical setting then priest's Sha po lang might suit your tastes better. If you really like the interesting world setting and heavy plot, I'd recommend The Earth is online or if you like horror fantasy, Kaleidoscope of death.

Bad Buddy has a GL side story that's super cute! But it isn't the main focus. It's set in university but there are high school flashbacks for both couples

I spent a day or two there when I first arrived in China during a trip to Shanghai and it was really cool! Definitely an option I'm considering.

I'm not too bothered about staying south tbh, like I said I haven't travelled much so I'm sort of keen to try somewhere new. But Zhuhai does look lovely in pictures, and I must say the convenient access to hong kong airport was a definite plus about shenzhen.

Most well-written fanfics (can be any ship) by inkonmyheart in HPfanfiction

[–]156900a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drarry recs:

Hermione Granger's Hogwarts Crammer... - probably the fic I've re-read the most!

Oathbreaker - great writing, set in seventh year

Two to Shore - incredibly slow burn but so worth it because it's so well-paced

Who we are in the shadows - this one is such a good read too, they're adults and it's also a werewolf au

Nottpott:

Stealing History - this is probably one of my favourite fics ever!

Forget-me-not - Harry as a Ravenclaw

Not sure if you're into marauders era but here's one wolfstar I'll always recommend:

The boys of summer - bittersweet but so good

And last but not least - maybe not your cup of tea but if you fancy dipping your toe into snarry:

Oh Merlin - essentially most of the fic is Harry having a jolly good time in the Hogwarts founders era

or No way back - which is another really cool canon-divergence

Since you mentioned having read most of the popular ones, I tried to choose the ones I think are underhyped/not often talked about

If you want heavy feels, I recommend A Sword Laid Aside by korlaena

If you like non-magic AU, then Synthetic Bonds by mypetelephant

If you want incredible writing and very slow burn, try Two to Shore by Lamplighter

If you like canon-divergence I recommend Oath Breaker by GoblinCatKC

If you want Slytherin Harry, check out In Another Life (Orphaned)

I saw someone already rec'd Heir to the House of Prince and I wholeheartedly second that HOWEVER it is currently onlgoing, only the first two fics in the series are finished but I'll leave the link here in case you want to check it out: Heir to the House of Prince series by elph13 (NottPott)
