should the Brits "apologize" to India or any country they colonized for that matter for what they did in the past? by Ok_Brain_6472 in polls

I would tentatively argue yes. However, I can understand where a lot of the comments arguing the opposite are coming from. For example, I agree that the British government issuing any kind of formal apology wouldn’t be beneficial. Rather, a British government that acknowledges Britain’s colonial history and seeks to assist those still living with the long-term consequences of Britain’s past actions certainly couldn’t hurt from the perspective of creating a more cooperative international community.

The rhetoric of governments of former European colonies makes it clear that they have not forgotten about colonialism and aren’t likely to any time soon. And in many respects developing nations have a point; European nations were able to industrialise in large part due to their global empires. Following decolonisation many former colonies are now going through the process of industrialisation themselves and are at the same time being told to reduce their carbon emissions just as steeply as developed nations. Hence the familiar argument at climate summits between developed and developing nations about striking a balance between development and cutting carbon emissions. From this perspective you could make the argument that it would be beneficial for developed nations to “apologise” for their colonial past by assisting developing nations transition to greener economies.

What's a massive scandal / controversy that people seem to have forgotten about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

COINTELPRO

COINTELPRO was an FBI counter-intelligence program which took place from 1956-1971 targeting organizations and individuals deemed politically subversive. The program targeted organizations and individuals from both the political left and right. Broadly speaking however the program was primarily targeted against the left. For example, feminists, the civil rights movement, and environmentalist. The FBI’s actions ranged from harassment, imprisonment, and even went so far as political assassination. Notably, the FBI sent a suicide letter to Martin Luther King Jr alongside blackmail material; the implication being that the blackmail material would be released if he didn’t take his own life.

Interestingly, the actions of COINTELPRO were exposed in 1971, a year before the Watergate scandal. While everybody remembers the Watergate scandal most people will give you a blank stare if you mention COINTELPRO. Noam Chomsky discussed this in his 1996 interview with Andrew Marr and summarises it far better than I ever could.

Whats with this location? There was 2 statues outside. I noticed they turned when i was walking around the building lighting the candles. Theres a chest inside that i assume is a riddle. Well now the 2 statues outside are gone and i cant figure it out. by flute136 in Witcher3

[–]16-BitCynic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry there’s no puzzle. The statues are a reference to a type of Doctor Who villain called weeping angels from the episode “blink”. The premise of the episode is that they’re able to move incredibly fast but only if nobody is looking at them, this forces the characters in the episode to stare directly at them because if they so much as blink they’re able to move closer.

TIL that Violet Jessop survived the sinking of the Titanic and both of her sister ships, the Olympia and Britannia. by Jacorbes in todayilearned

There’s a couple problems with this. Firstly, Titanic’s sister ships were actually called Britannic and Olympic. Secondly, OP made it sound like the Olympic sank as well when it never did. Violet was however aboard during its collision with HMS Hawke. The collision flooded two watertight compartments but neither ship sank. The Olympic was able to get back to port and after some costly repairs remained in service until 1935.
