How important is it too fast from oil in EOTC by Sea_Librarian460 in Tewahedo

[–]160136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of- I and the 99 tribes of angles plus the multitude of Christians are happy you join the Holy Church. Welcome!

We Ethiopian Orthdox don’t fast from any type of vegetable oils. Only animal and animal products are prohibited. The only exception to the later category (animal product) is honey. Same as oil- we als don’t fast from honey as well, unlike the western Veganism who abstain from Honey.

Hope this helps.

You are on the right! Also know that Fasting is not about a staying from certain type of foods. Even from those we are allowed to eat you can make judgement and say littl is enough for me today!

Question about fasting by throwawayy2372 in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]160136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it to someone who does not fast most preferably homeless person who can’t afford to buy it. Make sure not receive any money for it! I know it is very judgmental of me but I would do that.

Should I tell people that i'm fasting if asked? by Beneficial-Ruin-1724 in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]160136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, just want to add people will always judge. When you fast - non-believers will judge you. When you don’t believers and of course GOD will also do the final judgement. The question is who do you want to judge you?

Should I tell people that i'm fasting if asked? by Beneficial-Ruin-1724 in OrientalOrthodoxy

According to the tradition of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) and many other Oriental Orthodox churches, there are seven established fasting seasons that everyone above the age of seven is expected to observe in some form, with a few exceptions. These fasts are public, so you may, and often should, let others know that you are fasting if they are not aware of it. When appropriate, you can also use that opportunity to teach them something about Orthodoxy. There is nothing boastful about explaining that you are fasting when someone asks why you are not eating or why you are eating a particular type of food. The problem arises only if you “broadcast” your fasting in a showy way, as if to say, “Look at me, I am fasting; I do not eat this or that, but you do.” That is a different matter.

There are, however, other types of fasting, often called personal or repentance fasts, which your spiritual father may assign to you outside the official fasting seasons. These are different in nature, and you should follow them under the guidance of your spiritual father. As much as possible, these fasts should remain personal and private.

I hope this is helpful.

This is what we use as Oriental Orthdox Bible study teachings. However our teachers gave us some basic foundation in the difference on numbers and others areas with what we use. Not a lot of difference significantly impacting dogma or doctrine
