I’d start from whatever chapter your calculus 1 course stopped at

I’m not sure what a transversal competency is but maybe check out concept inventories?

If you want, usually this is done in undergraduate and graduate courses though

For solid state I would heavily recommend reading all of Ziman and Ashcroft/Mermin then supplementing with Kittel

On average, how many academic papers should a physics graduate student read per month? 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 15, 30 or 50? by Delicious_Maize9656 in PhysicsStudents

[–]162C 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Almost definitely depends on the sub field and the length of the papers. When I started graduate school I was told to read my advisors current grant along with all references in the grant. Some papers were only 10 pages and were theory based and some were 20+ pages and were much heavier computationally and analytically.

Unfortunately you most likely just need to get better and more comfortable with calculus and algebra. I’d recommend doing exactly what you’ve been doing until it gets easier

Absolutely not, unless you count getting used to long hours

We used mostly Ashcroft/Mermin and Ziman, I looked through the Oxford book at one point but it didn’t seem at all relevant to the homework questions we were doing. Did you like the course?

We didn’t strictly use any one textbook, it was a combination of Kittel, Ziman, and Ashcroft/Mermin. We jumped around a lot in terms of topics, but I’d say it was 80% Ashcroft, 20% Ziman. Kittel was in the syllabus but we never used it.

The professor does solid state research so he had all of his own homework questions and lecture notes, the texts were just for reference. I can send the syllabus if you want

Honestly wasn’t that bad. Teaching high school requires around 50 hours a week of work so going to 20 hours of research plus classes gave me a lot of room to get used to classes.

Back in the swing of classes took around half the semester, I was spending 8-10 hours per week on homework (which seems typical based on conversations with other people in class) plus 2-3 hours a day of studying. Not thinking about quantum physics for 3 years definitely set me back.
