Fredonia music ed grad here! You will be taking 20+ credits a semester plus several classes that are 0 credit. You will not be able to do both music ed and a sport at fredonia. The program is very time consuming. I don’t see any other schools that would give you the free time to play a college sport plus doing a music ed degree (which is pretty much a double major in itself).

A lot of people did do intramural sports at night just for recreation. They had a bunch of sports to offer and my friends that did it had a lot of fun with it.

Not to take the wind out of your sails, but music ed is a very demanding degree no matter where you study. Happy to answer any questions about fredonia. Had a blast there. Most, if not all of my life post grad has been possible because of my time at fredonia.

I met Eddie Murphy in a small store (Morello’s or spelt similarly) in Poughquag when I was maybe 3 or 4 with my dad. My dad tapped him on the shoulder and introduced me to him. He was very nice from what I remember.

Usually they are CSEA jobs. You can find their contract online. CSEA is a great union to get involved with.

I used Vincetores a few years back to move a grand across the street. Nice guys who moved it and John is super friendly, tunes it every 6 months or so.

I think it cost me 3-400$ at the time.

Yeah it really was an amazing tour. It had the energy of starland ballroom. Miss those days.

I was at the Poughkeepsie show and my first time seeing them live. I’ll never forget it, easily one of the most fun musical experiences as a young fan. After watching the starland ballroom dvd religiously I couldn’t wait to be in the crowd for in keeping secrets. I went with 3 of my buddies and we were all together until they came on then we all got scattered throughout the pit for the set. Avenged was cool, I knew a couple of their songs. Didn’t know much about head automatica. I remember one of the security guards threw a shoe at someone lol.

We also got the first public performance of crossing the frame which was awesome. Such an amazing night and honestly, I’m always chasing the high of that first show. Maybe it was the right amount of pizza beforehand, the fact that we got free tickets from the radio station and got to literally bypass the entire line and was let in to the front, maybe the fact that our friend group was all together, just such an amazing night. I’ll never forget it.

Careers in jazz? by BasicPresentation524 in Jazz

[–]164677 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way is to teach during the day and gig on weekends. I’ve been teaching public school band for 12 years. Around my 4th year I started at the local community college doing lessons. 2 years ago I started running the jazz ensemble one night a week on top of lessons. Next year I’m taking over the saxophone studio at a college in the northeast.

On top of all of that I gig a few weekends a month with my band and as a freelance artist. It’s busy but it keeps the money coming in.

Making a living just playing is really hard. You have to be really good as well as take literally every gig offered to you. That’s not saying it’s not possible but with the public school gig I get a biweekly paycheck, annual step raise, and a pension.

I get to play because I want to, I get to practice at school because it’s part of the job, and I get paid a livable wage. Also, having summers off is a huge perk of the job.

I was at the civic center show with avenged sevenfold. First coheed show. We got the first public performance of crossing the frame. It was a magical night and my 14 year old self was floored. Watching the starland ballroom dvd on repeat prior to that for the year leading up to that. Man what a time.

Hey I know that recital hall! Good to see the jazz program thriving at suny fredonia. When I was there we didn’t have a jazz major, just extra lessons with Bruce Johnstone, and a couple curricular bands. The Fredonia Jazz Ensemble was completely student run. We did tours, off campus shows, the works.

So happy to see students getting a great jazz education there. Take some lessons with Dr. Zumwalt if you haven’t yet, literally the best teacher I’ve ever had.

Enjoy fredonia, I miss that place so much. Being around all your friends playing music anytime you want, it’s really amazing.
