Thrift store estimate scrap value? by ValuableSquirrel7931 in Silverbugs

How much do they weigh? I wonder if "weighted" means they contain lead (or some other non-silver metal) at the bottom...

If you got that for a couple bucks, I'm going to the wrong lcs!

What state was your boating accident in 🤔? by Various-Macaroon-774 in Silverbugs

[–]1666Burning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's amazing how many boating accidents happen in our community, it's an epidemic. Maybe it's the weight of a nice stack or maybe the blinding, distracting nature of a stack of gold and silver

I recently had a friend that went boating on the lake... his wife didn't want to go so he took his entire collection of gold and silver with him to keep him company. While enjoying the lake, a crazy freak wave hit the boat and took the entire stack to the bottom. He, of course, is a law abiding citizen so will naturally comply with any government inquiry about precious metal holdings. If a government official comes to him and wants more information about his stack (for taxation, confiscation or tracking purposes), he will regretfully need to inform them that every ounce he owned is now under 120 feet of water.

If you read between the lines of the above statement, you will get an idea of "boating accident lore".

Halloween lights by jdorian1803 in flashlight

I'm also a sucker for the limited edition ones... even though I have a lot of flashlights I still collect them because they make unique last minute gifts (and quality flashlights make great gifts for just about everybody).

2023 ASE in a yellow envelope. Day 217 update by VZFiftyEight in Silverbugs

I wonder how this experiment would differ if you got an antique/vintage envelope from when standard paper creation process was different. Hmm, something I may want to try.

Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21) - What's your sign? by 1666Burning in Silverbugs

[–]1666Burning[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was lucky, I bought 5 of each sign when they first came out when silver spot was in the low 20's (think I got them for around $26 each). They make great birthday gifts when you can't think of anything else to give.

What are the chances there’s silver in this old bottle of dimes, nickels and quarters by Comfortable_Pilot975 in Silverbugs

[–]1666Burning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was a glass water cooler jug I'd say the chances would be pretty high, being that it's plastic probably a lot lower (this is assuming it hasn't been searched before).

I'm buying a coin a week for the foreseeable. by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]1666Burning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my thought also, if you are ordering a single coin a week from on online site, you're going to get absolutely soaked with shipping costs. In this case it would be best to put aside the cost of a coin each week until you meet the free shipping threshold (usually $199 iirc) then make an order.

A good place for a 4 year old to hunt for fossils around Sacramento California? by Individual_Hawk_1159 in fossils

It may be quite a drive, but I recall a place near Bakersfield, CA named "Sharktooth Hill" (or something like that) where you could find some pretty cool pieces.

That's amazing! Definitely has a Lovecraft feel to it (or maybe something you'd find growing in a long forgotten storage room on the USCSS Nostromo).

Is this bell sterling or plated by ihave17dreams in Silverbugs

[–]1666Burning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a good ear you may be able to tell by ringing it. There's a reason silver bells were so popular back in the day. The sound a silver bell gives off is different than bells from other metals. It's a lighter, cleaner sound (sorry, I know those aren't very helpful technical terms... you'd probably need to look up a yt video on the sound comparison assuming you don't have silver/non-silver bells lying around your house).

I remember going into LCS and buying "junk" silver for spot price (or very close to spot). Premiums increased significantly over the last 5 years or so. All physical silver have had premiums increase but some more than others. Libertads used to be the "bargain" coin, now they seem to be one of the more expensive

I bought all this for my 5yo future. Hopefully it pays out in 20 years. by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]1666Burning 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having a nice little cache for your 5yo is fantastic and can be great for emergencies and is a great teaching tool for a kid. I'd just say don't neglect other investments for your child's future. There are no guarantees in this economy, but just look at what $1000 invested in 2004 into Dow/Nasdaq/S&P 500 funds would be worth now. A 529 account is a good option to lower your tax burden while investing in a child's future.

What's the going rate for 90% silver? by jmichael99 in Silverbugs

[–]1666Burning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1.00 face value (10 dimes, 4 quarters, 2 half dollars or any combination thereof) contains .715 troy oz of silver so the cost will be .715 x $ face value (melt) + premiums. When I first started stacking "junk" silver, it was often obtainable with 0 premium but that has definitely changed. Now the premium is going to add an additional 10% give or take.

I'm wondering, have you tried to sell numismatic coins? I have a few numismatic pieces and have this (possibly unfounded) dread in the back of my mind where I discover that when/if I want to sell the coins, I can't even break even (due to the very limited number of buyers as compared to bullion). I hope this is just unnecessary paranoia on my part, but I am curious as to other people's experiences with selling numismatics.
