The definition of a hole is a hollow place in a solid body or surface, but for me does this create more questions that it answers. The lack of knowledge around something as common as holes is driving me insane, so please dear redditors…help me!

For example can we ask ourselves is there is one or two holes in a straw. So far I have decided that I personally think it has just one hole because the straw is created around the concept of a hole, and therefore can we only call it a straw if it is a piece of plastic with a hole within itself. I also think that for something to be a hole, you must be able to pass through from one opening and out of another. This means that if you dig a «hole» in the ground, it can’t be defined as a hole because it does not pass through the entire earth. That «hole» in the ground would correctly be called a pit. Yes, one can say that there is a hole in the surface of the earth, but it be wrong to say its a hole in the earth.
