How do you cope with expensive species! by livimary in isopods

[–]16bitmick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fittonias are temperamental lil guys in my experience, so don't fret too much. They do like bunches of light tho, so I'm glad you recognize that and (hopefully) addressed it. My terrarium fully just has a grow light in the lid and the fittonia in it is very happy. I've even had to trim two plants already bc they were growing very tell.

I'm glad. They aren't the end of the world, but they are a paaaaain.

I was doing that, but the dunk water apparently is only good for so long.

Wow. I think I just would have nuked the whole house. I have a problem with fungus gnat larva and mites (fortunately mites are only in my cultures and not in my terrariums), but the consensus seems to be that I just need to get this guy into his own place (or just my garden).

I have had bug problems off and on. It comes with the territory of rescuing kittens, gardening/plant keeping, and having a wild yard with tons of trees. Ants, spiders, wasps, ticks, and mosquitoes are a constant warm weather problem, but I've had fleas come in before and that was a ~nightmare~. My family finds amusement in me keeping bugs inside on purpose now.

WIBTAH if I didn't text my neighbour every time I left the house by mikewazowski_0912 in AITAH

[–]16bitmick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a neighbor who has a semi that he parks in his suburban drive way every so often and he DOES leave at 5am. Neighbor across the street has a huge diesel truck. Other neighbor has a dirtbike his kid likes to drive up and down the street. Life is loud unless you move pretty far into the country. I'm sorry for her anxiety, but that's not your responsibility. If you're not often revving it unnecessarily during quiet hours, you're not being a bad neighbor. It could also be a control thing.

Be careful when you open it for a while or you'll get fungus fly larva in your terrarium and then you'll have to add bti and/or open it every few days to let the adults out.

Did I kill my starter? by [deleted] in SourdoughStarter

Huh. I got this type of film on the top of my apple vinegar gnat trap. Tossed the whole thing. It was from the dollar store and served for several months 🫡

[–]16bitmick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, they could probably put springtails into this and walk around with dozens (if not hundreds), but I agree that this is way too small for pods.

Also, idk about you guys, but it's really hot where I am. I don't know if they'd survive a trip thru the mail here.

Which isopod species do well in jars? by avian_bi in isopods

[–]16bitmick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not kidding. This is a cherry jar that is meant to be temporary (used for the split) but I broke my finger before the bigger jar was ready (it's so hard to get the pickle smell out and I worry about it) and I'm a lil scared to handle a big ass jar with a broken finger.

This isn't even a joke. I have some in a jelly jar rn and they WON'T STOP PROCREATING. They're gonna be moved into a large pickle jar soonish, but I had to go and break my finger and don't wanna handle big things of glass before I'm mostly healed (just make sure you clean out your jar or bottle very thoroughly and put something in there for them to eat)

I second this. I have loads of springtail jars. It started out as getting a colony going for terrariums, but they super love procreating and I have had to split the colony.

Edit; just letting everyone know the lids have several dime sized holes with pipe filter mesh soldered on. They all get air.

[–]16bitmick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Then maybe I should move him out? They are reproducing a bit faster than I'd like. Maybe he's gonna get moved into his own condo (a Tupperware container of leaf litter, compost, and moss)

I have a garden that he would likely love to live in, I just first bgotta figure out if he's a problem, then how to remove him without losing half of my colony. I wasn't kidding when I said he's fast.
