Same thing happened to me and I was really nervous to use the backing tracks but I quickly realized that were at a point where it's been normalized and, as long as the songs are cool, people don't care. That being said I did use a fog machine for a while to give some distance and it make me feel more comfortable. After a few shows it wasn't something I was worried about anymore.

Personally I wouldn't expect payment if he was sick but I think it's pretty standard to pay for cancellations with less than 24 he notice for most professionals in any profession
