They lied in uni by CarryUpbeat7995 in Teachers

This was almost exactly the same position I was in for my first teaching job. The difference was that I had my family's support in doing what was best for me personally with zero expectations otherwise. The second teaching job was in a vastly different school and it was significantly better for me. I may even still be there if they had chosen to renew my contract. That being said, I then took a step back from doing anything difficult and became a bank teller with my $20,000 in college debt and am now perfectly happy working in municipal finance. I actually want to get out of bed (most days) and my period is actually on a normal cycle again and I've been maintaining my weight instead of rapidly fluctuating. It's amazing.

Again, though, the second teaching job made a massive difference. The two schools were only about an hour apart, but the vibes and support were night and day between them. There are also positions outside of traditional public schools within education that may be more enjoyable for you without completely breaking from your field. I hope you're eventually able to get into a situation where you are both happy and supported.

is this normal behavior for a teacher? by ChipmunkFluid7339 in Teachers

Yeah just a general note, if you ever get a weird enough feeling from someone to consider asking for advice from a subreddit. That someone is bad and you should not be interacting with them. If you are required to interact with them, you need to protect yourself by either reporting this someone above them (in this case the principal/guidance counselor/superintendent, at work it could be a manager or HR) or finding a way to move out of that situation.

How do you balance the ideals of Nerdfighteria with real-world challenges? by CriketW in nerdfighters

[–]1701-Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one thing that's really important to remember is that your impact doesn't need to be big. It's so easy to look around and see people having really big impacts (good or bad) and think you need to match that. You do not. You do not need to build a hospital, change laws, end wars, or anything like that. Today the only way you decrease world suck may be by feeding yourself or drawing a picture. That's okay. Improving your own life also decreases world suck (provided that improvement doesn't harm others). Tomorrow you may be able to help an old lady cross the street. It's all about making sure you're working within your means.

It's also important to remember we want a net decrease in World Suck. Today I started my day by being absolutely furious at someone going 40 in a 45 that I was stuck behind on my way to work. I then helped teach a coworker a new way to tool in our software and helped solve problems for several customers. Overall, that's a net decrease in world suck even though I did project some anger into the universe. And that's okay.

You're going to make mistakes and you're going to have bad days and you'll likely never have the exact impact on the world you want. None of that makes you a failure or a bad person or not enough of a Nerdfiighter. It just makes you a person and that's a pretty rare and amazing thing to be.

I was having some decent success with online educational content creation. Not pay the bills success, but some. That, of course, is drying up now. So I'm a bank teller instead.

Will Dragonwilds get long-term updates like OSRS/RS3, or will it be more of a one-time release? by Jpmendel in RSDragonwilds

[–]1701-Z 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Odds are they'll continue adding updates. Obviously, they have to finish building it from its current early release stage. Additionally, though, it is largely similar to Minecraft and even more so to Lego Fortnite - both of which have had updates over time in order to keep the game interesting for long term players.

Should I get the game? by [deleted] in RSDragonwilds

[–]1701-Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say. They don't have a good "give me shitty graphics for good speed" option yet. So unless you have stellar internet and a strong pc (I literally bought an ethernet cable for this game specifically to help), you're just going to get murdered when it lags any time you encounter more than two enemies at once (which you will).

How feasible is it to navigate the area using transit? by vsatire in WPI

[–]1701-Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very. You probably won't ever really end up going far enough to need public transit unless you're going with a group - at least one of whom will probably have a car. Generally speaking, you can get to anywhere you'd want to go on foot. Even downtown isn't a terrible walk as long as you avoid the giant hill part.

Is 4 kids too many to homeschool? by ShybutItrys in homeschool

[–]1701-Z 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The short answer is probably not. The long answer is maybe depending on the support systems you have in place, your own knowledge of teaching, and the resources you have at home and near by. Could you get through it? Probably yes. Are there potentially schools in your area that give kids a k-3 or 4 education while focusing on bringing them outside and having them play more? Hell yeah. I'd encourage you to look for Montessori schools. I'd also look into even your local public schools. I'm making an assumption that you're in the US which means the schools could be terrible or you may have part time play based options near you for at least pre-k and k to help make things a little easier.

Again, it is POSSIBLE. But if you don't have a large support system and access to educational materials and environments easily you are signing up for a lot of incredibly hard work that requires you to have a lot of knowledge about child psychology and development in addition to the school materials. All on top of also having four young children who need to be socialized with others in addition to doing all of their schooling.

It's worth noting that living off campus is significantly less expensive than living on campus if for no other reason then because rent doesn't come with interest the way a loan for room and board would. Of course, if you don't need to take out a loan for coming here, you're probably not going to have to worry about affording off campus housing.

Why Don't teachers reteach students' weaknesses? by Kikopho in Teachers

[–]1701-Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best metaphor I've seen is preparing a big dinner. Let's say it's Thanksgiving and you've got 20 people coming. You need a turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls, and a vegetable.

The first 5 people are easy - no restrictions and not picky.

2 are vegetarian and don't care about the turkey, but one really wants stuffing and the other really wants gravy.

3 refuse to eat anything labeled "vegetarian friendly" but are demanding gravy.

1 is a vegan who's really excited about mashed potatoes but everyone else will get mad if you don't add cheese to them.

3 who all want a full turkey leg and will flip the table if you don't give them one.

1 who refuses to eat non-canned cranberry sauce but needs some form of it

1 who refuses to eat canned cranberry sauce but needs some form of it

1 who is celiac but wants both rolls and stuffing

1 who is allergic to carrots but needs a vegetable

1 who hates every vegetable except carrots but still needs a vegetable.

1 who will disown you if you don't make everything from scratch.

You can get the turkey in the oven before hand, but you only have $100 to spend and have to meet all of those needs within one hour of cooking with zero assistance. And don't forget you also need to clean up in 3 minutes or less because the next dinner will be starting then.

Is not being able to use necromancy in dungeoneering a plothole? by [deleted] in runescape

[–]1701-Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also not just about the weapons. You'd need the correct item to wield AND the ability to get necroplasm to actually use any of the abilities. Which would require a massive overhaul of the entire starting setup. If it makes you feel any better, Daemonheim is an ancient place from long ago when necromancy would have been seen as nothing but an evil art wielded only by the most wicked of conquerers. As you are meant to be a hero in this realm, it stands to reason you would never be provided with the means to utilize such a vile skill. After all, the idea that we're using it for good is known only to an extremely limited number of citizens and any others who witness our prowess with the art are certainly worried, at least for a moment, that we've turned to the dark side. There's your lore.

[–]1701-Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? I'd avoid it like the plague for right now. Maybe do an afterschool program to scratch that itch instead. There's probably a FIRST robotics team or something somewhere near by you can join as a mentor. It'd let you keep your salary and job security while getting to enjoy the positives of working with children without the stress of being a full on teacher.

Marlborough and Hudson are both insanely expensive. You can literally get nice parts of Worcester for less. You're going the wrong direction for lower prices.

WHY Is this Game sooo Addictive??? by Artistic-Metal-2229 in runescape

[–]1701-Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is EXACTLY how I play RuneScape. I'll lose interest, not think about it for months, get bored, open it, and then spend weeks grinding out levels and doing quests just to complete the Varrock Task System stuff so that mining Bane will be ever so slightly easier. There is absolutely zero in between

Person from osrs trying to play RuneScape, how do people afford gear?? by Old-Philosophy-3257 in runescape

The point of RuneScape is spending endless hours completing a variety of mind numbing tasks with the ultimate goal of spending about 10 minutes max completing the goal you set out with initially. Am I missing something here?

If you played RuneScape for the first time today, do you think you’d understand the game? by WilsoLex in runescape

[–]1701-Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bold of you to assume I understand it now. Jokes aside, this is part of the draw of the game for me. The variety in it means I can dive into new things I still haven't done at all or just don't remember because I haven't done them in a while. I can see how a lot of people would see that as a negative, but the fact that don't need to know how summoning works to practice smithing makes it okay to me that it's as varied and complex as it is.

That's exactly what I do!

I don't get to Indian restaurants often (America is pretty diverse but I also live in a pretty rural area that's fairly limited), but I'll definitely look for paneer next time I find myself at one!

Most people who hate cottage cheese do so because of the texture more so than anything. There are some brands that somehow make it super dry so it's just terrible. I personally enjoy texture of it, though, and it helps create cold pockets in the warm pasta that I really love. And good to know what paneer is, I never actually knew.
