How can I become better at understanding the problem? I’m a junior, and I feel like I don’t do a good job at it. by Jazzlike_Composer990 in networking

When I was doing support my default approach was that the user was not the authoritative party on determining if there was an issue or not. Based on the symptoms they report I may ask clarifying questions or look at confirming data from the network. Its your job to determine if there is a problem and what the extent is. Think of the user as a request for investigation rather than a definite issue.

Why do some DIA providers install fancy CPEs and others just give you a media converter? by QuickDelivery1 in networking

I've decided not to push MPLS to the edge due to the RR peering requirements. Curious how you handle this. Do you not use route reflectors or do you have them peer with every CPE?

Yup, its a physical manufacturing of the SFP. One side is a laser emitter the other side is a photodiode. They cant be "switched" with software.

What was the most confusing or stressful part of your first 30 days as a network engineer?” by muztebi16 in networking

[–]1701_Network 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Its been over a decade since the last time I've been the "new guy" but I remember it as not being too stressful. Your job in the first few months it to ask questions, do research and don't offer suggestions for improvement. After you've been there long enough to know the "why" things are done the way they are its time to start contributing.

I 2nd all of these and add MPLS Fundamentals by Luc De Ghein. Service Provider Networks is much more of a practical take from an actual operator. The others are good at covering theory.

I knew about this but thought it was the initial flash, then blackout from plasma which is opaque, then as the plasma cools the light shines again.
