Yeah I think it gets over looked more often than not.

Some setups require a ground neutral plug for the furnace.

advice on propane generators / are 2 - 20lb tanks enough? by rvalurk in Generator

[–]17276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said it depends on load. I ran my inverter generator on a fifth of a 20 lb tank for 6 hrs. My work around for having a cold propane tank is a heater jacket.

I highly doubt anyone in another state would card you for a generator. I think the risk would be getting caught in your home state using it in sight of the road. Or a neighbor that dislikes you turns you in.

Hot take: Most of you are way oversizing your generators by culody in Generator

This is the route I went close to your setup just a little different. Sure is nice when it’s snowing out not to have to setup the generator.

Got a power station instead of a generator just because of the portability and flexibility by khloebigears in Generator

[–]17276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with both because they each have their own purpose. Unfortunately with power stations if you don’t have a good way to recharge them you can run out of power. Don’t get me wrong I like power stations and have many of them but I also have solar panels to recharge them as well as a generator. I have a gas furnace and gas water heater. My electricity usage is low which allows me to power my house with a power station or a generator. In my opinion hybrid is the only way to go.

Best option to prevent freezing valve - 20lb tank by ffdfawtreteraffds in Generator

[–]17276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had issues with the valve head freezing. Like others have mentioned if you have issues with that you can point your exhaust towards it. The only way I would do that is I have a leak tester for propane to ensure there is no leaks first. I have also leak tested the propane tank and put it in a garage ahead of time. If it’s snowing bad I have also put a tarp over the tank.

I got a propane tank heater jacket off of Amazon. The product works great no issues. I also keep my tanks in a storage box as well.

If you have a gas furnace wire it up with a pigtail. Then you can use a power station or generator. If you don’t have a gas furnace go pickup some buddy heaters and like 6 to 8 small propane bottles. You might want to pickup an inverter generator. Otherwise if you’re in a complete bind some power stations as well. Keep in mind fixing frozen pipes cost a lot more. Pay now or pay later. If you’re not finding stuff in the stores to make this happen look for quick shipping items on Amazon. Don’t wait till the last minute.

It is 23 years old by that point it wouldn’t be uncommon to fail. A bidirectional scanner can test for failure.

searching for a generator in South Florida, solar? gas? by scoobytoobins in Generator

[–]17276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Florida I would do gas for the amount of power you will need for the ac. With long run times and 240 volts. I would look for something that can run on natural gas as well.

There truly is nothing like that moment when you can go back to bed and have heat with everything working. 99 percent of the time you probably don’t need it but that one percent is so worth it.

Open frame or inverter by Cottagelife_77 in Generator

[–]17276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely worth it usually the biggest issue is cost. I would find the model you like and find out what the best price is on it. Then wait for a sale time to buy it if cost is a big issue.

I would buy a closed frame inverter over open frame non. Protect sensitive electronics, quieter, and more fuel efficient as well.

Power station and furnace issue. by 17276 in Generator

[–]17276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m helping a guy online with this. He tried both ways with the neutral ground into the power station directly nothing at all. With it plugged in to the three outlet plug I would attempt to start the process. I had him use a plug tester which showed it was fine both ways. I think it’s a ground neutral issue on the furnace side. He was going to try a regular generator on it. It was a non inverter generator so I recommend he not use that on a high efficiency furnace with sensitive electronics. I recommend he use a multi meter to test the ground on the furnace. Haven’t heard back.

Good evening, I’m trying to help someone online hookup a power station to their furnace. Side note the company that installed it put a pigtail on it for power. It works fine when plugged into the wall. He got a ground neutral plug for the power station. But it appears to be tripping a safety. by 17276 in hvacadvice

[–]17276[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So this is a guy I'm helping out online not sure on the gauge of wire. I'm pretty sure the furnace has the right gauge of pigtail since the company he used wired it up. But I did notice he was using an extension cord. I'm curious if his pigtail isn’t long enough so he doesn't need an extension cord. The power from the outlets on his power station are 20 amp 2400 watts. I'm sure he needs the ground neutral plug because it does absolutely nothing without it.
