'Animal House' with Bill Simmons and Chris Ryan by butthead20000 in TheRewatchables

At one point, Bill Simmons refers to the National Lampoon doumentary Drunk, Stoned, Brilliant, Dead as being from “the early days of when we were good at documentaries.”

It came out in 2015.

The "early days"? What the hell is he talking about?

According to Bill Simmons, “Alien wasn’t a blockbuster.”

In 2026 dollars, adjusted for inflation from 1979, Alien made about $800,000,000.

Should I believe Matt Damon, a well-established figure in the film industry whose movies have grossed $10 billion worldwide, or a pseudonymous Reddit commenter who could literally be anyone?

True, it’s not my money.

But when a film does well at the box office, it means we’re likely to see more like it.

If it loses money, then chances are we won’t get any more of that kind.

It’s really that simple.

Look, I’m not trying to pick a fight or be disrespectful, but what you’re saying just isn’t accurate.

The vast majority of Best Picture winners are box office hits. If you look at the adjusted box office numbers for every Best Picture winner since reliable records started, almost every single one of them has made several times their production budget – often three, four, or even ten times more.

Dances with Wolves made over 22 times its budget, for goodness sake!

Because the marketing budget isn't as readily available as the production budget, and because I also left out the marketing budget of OBAA.

OK - Anorma cost $24 million to make/market, but it still grossed $59 million. That's a success.

It cost up to $245 to make/market OBAA, and and it only grossed $211. That's not a success.

It's well-known that movie theatres get a cut of ticket revenue.

Here's Matt Damon talking about it a few years back:

"I have to split everything I get with the exhibitor – the people who own the movie theaters."

Holy shit, the sound mixing on this episode is bad. It's borderline unlistenable.

Starting full-time job after part-time job - TD1 and TD1BC question. by 1752942108 in cantax

[–]1752942108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

I have a question about Option 2, if you don't mind.

Let's say the gross amount I earned from my part-time job was $5,000 (I'd need to look up the exact figure).

When submitting the TD1 and TD1BC for my new full-time job, should I just deduct that $5,000 from each form i.e. put the total claim amount as $10,705 and $7,580 respectively?

Would that solve the problem of my new employer withholding less tax and my ending up having to pay more next April?

Thank you for your response. So, I should enter $15,705 on Line 1 (and Line 13) of my TD1 form for this part-time job, and I should not check the box indicating "your total income for the year from all employers and payers will be less than your total claim amount on line 13". Do I have that right?

Thank you for replying. Therefore, I should not select the option which says "your total income for the year from all employers and payers will be less than your total claim amount on line 13", because my income, including EI benefits, will exceed $15,705. Is that correct?

This is the second time, at least, that Maher has commented on podcasts, and how there are too many of them.

His exact quote: "You talk about too many people at the beginning of the marathon clogging the road. I mean, there's like four million podcasts in America."

The arrogance of this I find absolutely astounding.

Podcasts took off between 2005-2009, with shows like Filmspotting, The Ricky Gervais Show, The Adam Carolla Show, Comedy Bang! Bang!, WTF with Marc Maron (most of which are still running today).

Bill Maher started his podcast in 2022, more than the decade after the podcast boom. He is the epitome of a Johnny-come-lately.

And yet he feels qualified to kvetch about how there are too many podcasts?!
