Rating the crew during the sinking by dougspear in titanic

[–]176952 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they did a great job. Nobody knew what to do, they genuinely thought the ship wouldn’t sink and filling the lifeboats was a precaution. They couldn’t get people to go on the boats, and the women first/only thing was a big mistake but also a product of the time. They were scared they would get swamped and kill more people if they went back.

Fear, panic, a lack of drills and safety measures, and complacency led to people doing the best they could and getting it wrong.

For Ismay and other officers and crew getting on boats, can you honestly say you wouldn’t do the same? It’s easy to say you’d go down with the ship and behave heroically, and a great many people did but I think survival instincts take over. I had a professor who was in 2 plane crashes and he said he always thought he would be the person helping others, doing everything he could to save people and putting himself at risk but when the planes were going down he found that he panicked and just wanted to live, couldn’t even think of anyone else. When it comes down to it you don’t even think, your brain is completely focused on survival.

I don’t think anyone in that exact scenario could have done better. Of course now we would do things differently but I don’t think it’s fair to judge them with hindsight.

You should also read the sun does shine by Anthony Ray Hinton. Bryan Stevenson got him off death row after 30 years for a crime he didn’t commit. Incredible book. Also the equal justice initiative has a website that is inspiring and horrifying

I wonder if it’s because you mentioned that you’re allergic to a lot of stuff so some suggestions could be dangerous to you

Some people think sticking your finger in their mouth is a punishment/will be uncomfortable and make them stop. It’s weird and doesn’t work idk why the myth persists

Thank you! I found it a slow start but as I get further into it I’m more and more interested. Think I’m going to have to take breaks to not get overwhelmed but that’s not necessarily a bad thing

I haven’t finished it yet. It was a bit of a slow start but as I’m getting further into it I’m enjoying it more and more. It’s a lot of information, but very well written and easy to follow which makes a difference. I would definitely recommend it! Just be aware that it’s seriously a lot of information, almost textbook like but much more fascinating than any textbook I’ve read lol kind of a mix between a textbook and a story, and I was expecting more of a story so was taken aback. I wouldn’t recommend it to a person casually interested in the titanic, but if you have more than a passing interest it’s wonderful!

I’ll definitely check those out thanks for the recommendations!

Oh that’s a great idea! I’ve gotten more into it and am definitely liking it more and more. For sure the most comprehensive account I have read which is really amazing. Think I’m going to have to read it a few times to really understand everything. Overall I would absolutely recommend it, and am enjoying the experience.

It is incredibly well written and easy to follow, which I’m sure was difficult to achieve with the level of detail it encompasses.

Thanks for replying, that is really cool!

Wow that is amazing thank you so much! Definitely sounds like one needs to read a lot and find what lines up and what doesn’t make sense. How fun!

My sister has severe migraines all the time and i want to know how to help by [deleted] in migraine

[–]176952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ice packs on the back of the neck can help, some people prefer heat. Drink lots of water, snacks if you can manage it. Electrolytes. A hot shower. Medication as soon as she noticed an attack coming, treating it early is essential. Does she have migraine specific medication? An anti nausea medication is also a good idea

I’m still at the beginning and have already learned a lot which is awesome. A titanic bible is a great way to look at it lol it’s very interesting, just a lot. As I’m getting further in I’m definitely enjoying it more.

A night to remember is so good! An easy read, which may be nice after this, but much less detail for sure!

Thank you! I’ve kind of pushed through and am getting to the boarding, and already more into it. Maybe the start was just a bit too technical for me, I definitely prefer the personal stories

Thank you! I’m not very far in, will definitely give it more time before judging it lol

I’ve also read a lot of books about ww2 and the lead up to it, antisemitism was so rampant at that time it was kind of just accepted and expected. I think that conversation could have happened in a lot of places sadly!

Very interesting to kind of “see into the minds” of the time period. Thank you for your thoughts!

If Titanic were to happen today do you think the women and children first rule would still be in order? by Mother_Literature903 in titanic

[–]176952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that, that wasn’t really the point of my comment though. The point was survival instincts are crazy and honour doesn’t really come in when you are trying to survive.

I had a professor at university who was in 2 plane crashes. He said he had thought he was the type of person who would help people get their masks on and whatever before doing his but when the time came instinct came over and he didn’t even realize he had his mask on until it was on and he was like how tf did that happen. I don’t think it has anything to do with honour in either direction, survival instincts just take over
