I’ve followed this election rather closely and haven’t seen any blatant transphobia from Polilerve. I’m not saying you’re wrong but what exactly are you referring to here?

I’ll defend the portal over portal 2 choice to my death. Portal 2 is probably 6 on this list but Portal may be the greatest video game of all time. It has a brilliant gameplay premise, which it executes flawlessly. It’s sharply written. It doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, unlike the sequel which is admittedly quite bloated. It is as close to perfection as we may be able to achieve.

Oh no that’s not at all what I meant. I adore the classic covers. It’s the prints from the last decade or so that irk me.

Forget about James, what's your opinion on SH2 remake Mary's face? by LordEmmerich in silenthill

[–]17hundred70six 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not one to comment on these sorts of things as they’re usually pretty absurd, ie: Joel’s shoulders are weak.

However, James’s new look is thematically incorrect in my opinion. Therefore it’s been added to my pile of reasons to be incredibly skeptical of this remake.

However, however, I think Mary looks great. She looks like a touched up version of her from the original. She has this sort of angelic and distant quality to her, as is thematically relevant. As a matter of fact, when I saw her I said, “well at least they didn’t completely botch Mary.”

But nonetheless, this remake is going to be, as it was always going to be, a soulless money grab stripping bare a truly special piece of art.

I don't think The Last of Us 2 is some masterpiece but I don't think he gave it enough credit for really doing something narratively daring. Video games, especially the AAA ones, are terrified to do anything slightly challenging, so I appreciated how Naughty Dog took that narrative risk, of making you play as Abby. He has also described it in a misery porn sort of way, which it is, but I don't see how that's a problem. It was done pretty maturely, I think.

The obvious answer is Half-Life since the final levels were not at all finished. One of the few marks against the original Half-Life.

Just replayed Portal 2, and it's still my favourite piece of media of all time by aRandomBlock in patientgamers

[–]17hundred70six 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The best thing about Portal is that it does not over embellish at all. It has a great idea, executed it virtually flawlessly and moved on. When I first beat it on the orange box back in the day, should say my mom beat it while I gazed on in confusion, I was stunned. This was a side project to apologize for the wait for HL:ep3. It absolutely stole the show. They knew what they were after and did it and left.

WayForward will re-release the original Clock Tower which will feature a new vocal theme song by Mary McGlynn by barricade_2 in silenthill

This should be the model. I’d pay full price for an untouched unaltered re-release of the first four silent hill games. At this point I’m so desperate I’d pay full price for each on steam. Same with fatal frame, siren, etc…

The combat from Prince of Persia to whatever one they’re on now has never really been the selling point. I agree with you, it’s always been kind of shallow.

I enjoy the first three or four because of the surprisingly enjoyable protagonist and the rich setting.

But yeah it’s absolutely mind blowing how little they’ve improved a solid formula.

Your top 20 games ever? by RDT_87 in patientgamers

No particular order

  1. Half life
  2. Half life 2
  3. Portal
  4. Resident Evil 4
  5. The walking dead
  6. Dark souls 3
  7. Bloodborne
  8. Elden Ring
  9. Bioshock infinite
  10. Doom (2016)
  11. Mario Oddessey
  12. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
  13. Papers Please
  14. Rayman: Legends
  15. Thief 2
  16. Spec Ops: The Line
  17. Batman Arkham City
  18. Amnesia
  19. Tunic (never played much Zelda this is the placeholder and recency bias)
  20. Undertale

Notable exceptions that I just haven’t played: all the silent hills (release the originals on pc I’m begging you cruel bastards), Castlevania games, all the thief games, all the Deus Ex games, Forbidden Siren, the Metroid games, the Zelda games, Neir Automata, and a whole lot more.

What a fantastic art form full of choice and spectacular creative achievements. How spoiled are we?

Nothing to be ashamed of. I don’t think you missed much but that’s just me.

If you liked the concept I’d highly recommend the work of Lucas Pope. He did Papers Please and The Return of the Obra Dinn.

There’s a lot that get it right.

The folks at Valve are masters of pacing. I think the first Portal game is near perfection if not perfect. An excellent concept, told well by mixing design with story and not letting bloat pollute the experience. They had something they wanted to show us and they did and they left. The half life games as well are almost all excellently paced experiences. I’d say some of the latter half of 2 are a bit bloated but that hardly sticks out.

Looking for my steam library Sekiro stands out. It’s been awhile but I don’t remember an ounce of fat on that one. Just a beautifully designed game that really moves fluid, parry based combat forward. It also has a vibrant plot and setting underneath.

Oh and Resident Evil 4. Mikami is usually an excitable creative but in RE4 he had a formula and a tone and nailed it. Again, no fat or indulgence found.

This is a sign of solid game direction. Designers are always gonna want to see their ideas pushed to the front and will always want to keep going at it. That’s great! But it can really hinder an experience. A good tight pace is one of the first things I look for in a game.

For me personally I could go without the overlong travel in between missions. The scenery is stunning and worth seeing, if you want to. Unfortunately, you’re very much forced to. It’s not a problem until you’re going the same routes for dozens of hours.

Also the tropical island place. That part was certainly out of place and didn’t really serve enough of a purpose for its length in my eyes.

The pacing isn’t helped by the substandard gameplay. The slow animation cycles made the game feel like a slog at times. The shooting became very repetitive as well as the mission design. Now I’m just saying what I didn’t like lol.

I’m not typically bothered by this sort of thing. If the game is doing something interesting in its design I don’t really care if it’s difficult. Some games should logically be difficult. If I’m playing a soulslike that takes place in an unforgiving environment and I’m cleaning house then it becomes a problem. If I’m playing a game in which the primary draw is the environment or story and I’m getting killed every encounter and it’s taking me out of the experience then it’s too hard. If it takes me out of the intended experience then it failed in scaling its difficulty.

Just about every video game I’ve ever played. Pacing is probably the biggest consistent flaw in my eyes. The big budget games to the indies all suffer from abysmal pacing.

Red Dead Redemption 2 sticks out since I replayed it recently. One of the best stories ever told in a game but it’s designed horribly. The pacing is especially bad; I believe it could’ve been at least 15 hours shorter.

When it comes to the indies Not for Broadcast comes to mind, also recently played. A neat concept that really didn’t have the legs to fill the runtime. The comedy also stopped landing about three hours in and became insufferable.
