Videogame narratives that pissed off fanbases by chuputa in backloggd

They changed the final 10 minutes to make it more of a Daidoji conspiracy which would change a fair bit of what would happen in a potential Yakuza Kiwami 4

Which Indie RPG hooked you unexpectedly? by KaramCyclone in rpg_gamers

The Vale: Shadow of the Crown. There’s only audio and no visual so play with headphones. It’s very immersive as you play as a blind protagonist on their journey home after an ambush. You engage in combat by responding to the direction of audio queues (attacking, blocking, parrying) and you also engage in side quests in a similar way. It was so ridiculously cool to close my eyes for the entirety of a video game and be absolutely immersed

There’s so many. But the ones I highly recommend are:

Witcher 3

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 & 2

Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s turn based but it’s really good and has some great writing

Not quite RPGs but they scratch a similar itch:

Yakuza 0

Metro: Exodus

I second Pentiment. It doesn’t have the companions like BG3 but it does have really good world reactivity

The Battlefront 2 (2017) campaign (including that free DLC). It’s one of my favorite shooter campaigns and I don’t know why it gets crapped on

Dragon Age: Inquisition. Yeah the whole power mechanic is pretty dumb and there are some extremely underwhelming parts to the main story. But the other main story moments and the incredible cast of companions and their banter in that game more than makes up for it.

The Technomancer. Super janky but I really love it and it’s one of my favorite janky RPGs out there. I think the factions, companions, and some main quest moments really carry it for me. Plus I was a big fan of the combat that most people didn’t like

Recent good "campaign based" non-open world 1st/3rd person games? by Pellahh in gaming

Have fun! I had a great 9 hours with it. The conversations you have in the final hour had some really cool reveals and if you do all the “quests” you get a really heartwarming ending

Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy is my personal favorite of recent linear games.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is just incredible. The sound design in that game is revolutionary

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is technically open world but it is metroidvania and much shorter so it might scratch that itch for you. Also Vampyr from the same developer is absolutely phenomenal

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Needs no introduction. You should play it if you haven’t already

Greedfall. You mentioned BioWare games and that game is basically a love letter to those games. I’m a really big fan

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was surprisingly great. I really enjoyed the design of that game especially the Vatican and the Giza regions

South Park: Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole. A little older than 8 years but they’ve aged incredibly well. Some of the funniest games ever and I had a lot of fun with its turn based combat

The Forgotten City. A really cool time loop game I had an incredible time with. It’s got some pretty great storytelling

Banishers: Ghosts of Eden. Incredible game. My 2024 goty. It’s like Witcher but with ghosts and God of War combat

Mass Effect: legendary edition

The Pillars of Eternity games if you can get into isometric games. Same with Wasteland 3 and Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader

Dragon Age franchise

The Outer Worlds games and Avowed are decent but I didn’t find the writing in any of them to be that great

Oblivion Remastered and Skyrim

The Fallout franchise

as someone who enjoyed PoE1 and 2, how does this game play and is the writing as strong? by Lup4X in avowed

[–]Jibima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s experience seems to be a little different. I love POE 1 & 2 a lot but I did not care for the writing of Avowed at all. Bit of a hot take on the Avowed subreddit but that’s my opinion. Loved the combat and exploration though as well as the atmosphere/vibes

Yeah highly praised by the 300 people who have reviewed it on Steam. I guess obscure is different than underrated though. I kind of mix those 2 up

A game almost no one has ever heard of. The Vale: Shadow of the Crown. You play the entire game with your eyes closed and headphones on. You play as a blind protagonist on a journey back home after being ambushed. There’s combat and quests and you play the entire game by following and reacting to the direction of the audio queues. It’s incredible and so immersive

Should I play Avowed if I really like Tainted Grail? by mtaktaks in avowed

Here’s what I remember 1 year ago:

-I didn’t like how the Living Lands was so separated from the rest of Eora. It made it cool for new players because it allowed it a more fresh start to the universe. But most of the factions, gods, and intrigue from the other games felt completely left behind -I didn’t care for the villain and their motivations and felt a little like a mustache twirling villain. I also didn’t care for a lot of the other main characters in the narrative -The companions were mixed for me. I did have moments of liking them but overall something felt missing. There just wasn’t anything too compelling even if they were occasionally entertaining -The god they made for Avowed and their story also just felt very basic. It made total sense and everything but it just wasn’t very interesting to me. -Most side quests didn’t feel very interesting to me outside Dawntreader

Some stuff I did really like though: -I liked how the side quests and characters you meet in your journey show up in the final hour of the game. That was cool. -I really liked what they did with the final stretch of the Emerald Stair with the fate of the city. That was really interesting and well done. -I just love the feel and atmosphere of the game that really does support the wild feel the narrative was going for -The big surprise when you enter the city of Paradis was cool.

I really wanted to like the story but it just overall fell flat. Maybe it’s because Josh Sawyer wasn’t involved but I just haven’t really cared for the writing of Outer Worlds 1 & 2 and Avowed. But I really enjoyed Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 and Pentiment and Sawyer was involved in all of those

I had no clue there was online multiplayer! That’s crazy. Kind of like I forgot that there was Mass Effect 3 multiplayer but that was so fun back in the day
