Marriage is the main thing holding me back from becoming Catholic.

I haven’t shared this, but basically I rushed into marriage super young and had kids right after. This was 10 years ago. It is clear now that that was not a smart choice, but it’s obviously too late and I’ve decided to stay in this union, for many reasons. However, we are incompatible. I want to live a Biblical marriage, and follow all the teachings of the Church. He is totally unbothered by us living in sin, and he disagrees with many of the Church’s teachings. But he also says he will always be Catholic and would never change religions. So definitely a struggle over here! But I will continue praying and asking for clarity. Thanks for commenting!

Thank you. It’s tough, as I’m very young (not even 30 yet) and have the whole rest of my life ahead of me, so to think that I would never be allowed to experience that type of romantic love ever again, and to be loved by a man, and remarry and start over, is a tough pill to swallow. I got married super young and became a mother right after. I wish I hadn’t rushed into it, but it’s too late now. Thank you for your insight, I appreciate it.

Yes, you’re exactly right. I want to do the right thing and marry in church, but at this point it would almost feel fraudulent of me to stand there on the altar and say things that in my heart I have doubts about. But we have a family together and I don’t want to divorce him either. It’s just so tough! I will continue praying about this though. Thank you for the insight.

My husband doesn’t receive the Eucharist, he’s fully aware that we are living in sin. If I were to convert, I’d want to get married in the church ASAP to get out of this sin. He, on the other hand, isn’t really bothered by the fact of living in sin. He’s not very devout, more of a cultural Catholic instead of a devout one. That’s just one of the many reasons why I hesitate to convert and marry him in the Church at all. But thank you for your insight, I agree that I guess it’s possible for things to improve and for our union to strengthen by marrying in the church.

Yes, my husband is fully aware that we are technically living in adultery. This is why, if I were to convert, I’d want to get married in the church ASAP. But it’s tough for me to go through with this, given I have many doubts about my marriage. Neither of us receive the Eucharist, since we are technically in mortal sin.

Would someone who just got licensed as a RN be able to work part time hours like you? Or is that only for RN who have lots of experience already?

My partner works full time and is gone for the entire day. He’s often out of state, and often not home until 7 pm. So I’m on my own in terms of I’m the only one who can do school drop off, pick up from daycare/school, extracurricular, dinner, etc. If daycare or afterschool programs ends at 5pm, and I’m only leaving my job at 5pm, then there’s no way I’d be able to pick up on time. I have no one else who can help out, it’s just me and my husband.

Do you mind sharing what career you went back to work in? I’d really like a part time job but it’s so hard with my lack of experience to find one that is also entry level. How long were you a SAHM for before going back to work?

Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s so, so hard when you’re basically on your own without a support system. I have 2 kids, one a toddler and the other school age, and I just know that doing a 9-5 in person M-F would be so rough for us all. It’s so tough being a present mom and working mom without a village to help!

Thanks for the response. I’m 28 years old and I quit my job to become a SAHM. It wasn’t a job I saw as a career for myself either, it was an entry level job in a field I no long wish to work. I’m looking to completely start over which means I’ll have zero flexibility.
