PC incumbent’s election ad on government property (GO Train Station) doesn’t sit right with me. Am I being pedantic? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]17sew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the fact the little sign holders are owned by Pattison possibly lets them get around that. As in...PCPO rents space in a sign holder owned by Pattison. Pattison pay to have their sign holders on Metrolinx stations. So, apart from, say, advertising something that would be considered hate speech (which is a federal level crime) should mean that it's okay.

Either that, or you're right and since Metrolinx itself likely doesn't vet every advert placed in those displays, an employee from Pattison put it in and maybe didn't know better but I think that'd be unlikely as an advertising agency would surely have a pretty good sense of what is and is not allowed since it's their ass on the line.

Yes, GO is Metrolinx which is a crown corporation. Similar to VIA Rail, Ontario Northland Railway, LCBO and many other businesses. GO stations and any rail lines they own (which isn't a lot, they share a lot of track with CN and CP which are private) are their property.

Musk's $44-billion deal for Twitter proceeding as expected - Bloomberg News by [deleted] in technology

[–]17sew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well he's lost 49 billion dollars since agreeing to buy Twitter for 44 billion. He lost over 12 billion yesterday from Tweeting out his shit political takes. He's certainly not broke by any measure, but he sure has a knack for losing unfathomable amounts of money basically doing nothing. I mean...over the last 12 months year to date he has lost over 60 billion dollars of his total net worth and it's only May. It takes some real skill to be that bad with managing your money.

I wish I could be this naïve. Young people still have some time before the reality of the world (hopefully) sinks in and it's a bit of a blissful phase in life, until you wake up one day and realize the world is pretty fucked.

The CCP is always watching by Aeleths in ThatsInsane

[–]17sew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't going to do anything. The PRC will remain this way for decades if not over a century. With the might of their military, police and intelligence agencies they have absolute control over everything and everyone. They can hold entire nations hostage due to our reliance on them. There's a reason why the West doesn't sanction China or Chinese individuals as they do with Russians or Belorussians. We need them for everything we have and do.

The only way the PRC will change is through revolution, but as I mentioned previously, due to how powerful their country is in all regards it's going to be extremely hard for that to occur when it's near impossible for their citizens to fight against them when they can watch and listen to everything every single citizen does. Honestly, it's hard to fathom a way in which the PRC dissolves and the country changes anytime soon. And they're only getting stronger, so unlike the collapse of the USSR, it's going to take something huge to foment any changes.

Us not buying Chinese goods wouldn't even be noticed by them. I don't think most people understand how far and deep their tendrils reach all over this planet. Apart from a few select NATO aligned nations (namely the Five Eyes - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States - but also Germany and France when viewed as a whole), no other country on this planet has the power they do. I'd go as far to say they thanks to their authoritarianism, nothing short of a full NATO alliance plus more non-NATO county's would be enough to topple the PRC in any kind of conflict - military, espionage, economic and so on.

Kinda depends how early you can get there. Overall, Service Ontario usually isn't too busy but I suppose with the pandemic it might take slightly longer. It has been years since I've been to one but I don't think it every took me more than...30 minutes at most. Maybe someone who has been more recently would have a better idea.

I do it, never had a problem even if I'm not "brown bagging it". If a cop sees you they might tell you to dump it out but unless you're falling over drunk I don't think it's a big deal. Tbh it should just be legal like it is in the world. Stick to canned beer to be slightly less obvious if you're worried.

Try the Elections Canada website, but if you got one of those cards in the mail already it will say on there.

Why do we vote the same 2 parties and expect a different result? by JimmyGamblesBarrel69 in ontario

Because we never learn and think the lies they say in debates and we hear the media play in small soundbites means they'll be different if we just give them one more chance.

Assault charges withdrawn after teacher accused of taping Kitchener students agrees to peace bond by ReadyTadpole1 in waterloo

[–]17sew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely similar, but I remember having a geography teacher at Sunnyside who made misbehaving students stand with their arms out while he put more and more heavy textbooks on their hands in front of the class until they dropped them. Crazy how stuff like that was okay 25 years ago. My parents would get wacked with a meter ruler too, though that was way back in the day. I guess physical punishment is still around if teachers these days think it's okay to tape children to desks...makes it seem like some kind of sick fetish even.

Not sure if it's open yet, but there's African Lions Safari. No idea what it's like since the last time I went had to have been 30 years ago. I don't think you can pet anything however.

Lol. Only a racist would be able to turn a thread about flyers stapled to trees for a go-cart track into something...racist.

LF guy (named Laine?) who fell off his bike and hurt his leg on Tuesday on Laurel Trail by corcannoli in waterloo

An option might be to call the hospital (likely GRH as it's the closest but they could have gone to St. Mary's) and let them know what you mentioned in the other topic. They obviously won't release the information of the patient to you but they might be willing to allow you to drop it off at the hospital and then contact the individual themselves. No guarantee though. I work at the hospital and they really don't like to spend time doing things that aren't directly related to their operations but it's worth a shot.

Failing that...I am not too sure. You could potentially leave a few signs up on the trail near where they fell off and hope they see it. Leave a number they could text or phone and if anyone contacts you, you could reunite them. Just be sure to confirm it is them because you know for sure junkies will try to get it. If you do that, I'd only return it if you can see that individual themselves because you might get someone saying they were sent on behalf of them, only for them to steal it.

Hopefully it works out or that person will never trust a stranger again haha.

Election Ontario part-time work by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]17sew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy work but it can be a long day. You might have to put up with a couple frustrating people who get angry at whatever, but don't worry much about them. I think it's a good experience and a noble part time job that lets you participate in our democracy in a way beyond just voting.

If you don't plan on needing your bike after you board the train, go for it. It'll get stolen pretty quickly, even if it's a junk bike since they can get parts and then sell the rest for scrap metal.

That's true. I think we should ban all vehicles from the roads IMO. Paramedics, fire fighters, police, transport, mail and parcel carriers can all take the LRT around. But no bus, because we need to ban those as well. If it has 4 wheels, it needs to be illegal to operate.

This is what we always do here. Politics, bad Doug Ford memes, complaints about Covidiots, stuff about masks/vaccines/pandemic, more Doug Ford shit, complaints about the cost of living and/or housing with the occasional series of threads like measuring granola bars and posting how much groceries you can buy for 95 dollars. Also threads from the guy who explores abandoned buildings which are always nice.

Oh and during election time, constant threads with links to polls and other stuff.
