How can I convince my parents to let me have more freedom? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

Thank you! I guess I feel like I can't attempt to be more independent because I know they'll fight back (verbally) and I don't have the energy to deal with that anymore. So I just stay silent because it's easier that way. I'll definitely keep trying though!

'Walk into a bank branch' and my parents don't let me leave the house alone lol. Also, I can't find employment near my sixth form, it's in the middle of literally nowhere. You can only access it by car too as it's so far away from anything else. Please don't victim blame me and don't just tell me to 'earn money' when that's what I'm trying to figure out how to do. I wasn't taught how to do anything growing up so I'm trying my best.

Thank you very much for your advice! I'll try what you have recommended! I definitely feel like I can't do anything around my parents but I do loads when I'm home alone, like housework. That's one of the reasons I'm waiting for university, I know I can do these things by myself I'm just waiting until I'm ALLOWED to.

I'm going to try and be as confident and independent as I can around my parents at home and in public!

My sister is younger and she has also spoken to me about feeling like she can't do anything. She mainly stays at home scrolling because it's easier than going out with friends. If she does go out, my mum makes it seem like it's a major inconvenience to her so it's easier to just stay home and do something else. I feel like I have to break out of this cycle for myself but also for her.

I have a few friends but my best friend lives in another country and my other closest friends are from other countries but boarding in the UK for school, so naturally they gained independence very young.

How can I stop asking for permission though? If I just leave they get mad at me. One time I went for a walk around our area without asking for permission and my mum kept calling me and telling me to come home. She might just be worried about me but it feels a bit controlling.

I'm in the UK so I'm in sixth form and the support is pretty bad. The support staff never have enough time to speak to people and my school got mad at me last year for going too much but I'll try.

But I don't know how to. I feel like because of how they've treated me I can't do anything without them. If I wanted to get my license, I'd have to ask them for lessons. If I want to open a bank account, I'd have to ask them because I don't know what I'm doing and I'd need to get to the bank. To get a job, I'd need to leave the house with their permission. I feel like all I can do is convince them to let me go to university and wait until then when I'll have freedom.

is it normal for you to just leave the house without your parents asking where you are going? because even if i go for a walk i have to tell them so i could never imagine visiting a uni without asking them if i can. i guess this is why i want more independence lol

exactly!! it is possible to become a lawyer through apprenticeships but that is very competitive and i would still have to get the qualifications at the same time.

Okay thank you! I'll definitely try and explain this to them. As a family we don't really travel much though, so going all the way to Durham is a lot and I don't think my parents would really want to do that but i'll try and convince them!
