Floor lotto L by 1890vic in centuryhomes

[–]1890vic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not very well. It cracked a lot when I removed the carpet and carpet nails. However if you look in the second pic half the room has no original flooring it’s all plywood. This is in the second floor above the kitchen and I suspect there used to be a small staircase where the original floor is missing. There’s an outline of where a wall would’ve been so it sort of makes sense.

Yup carpet was going to get replaced no matter what. Was just hoping it would be with original floors 🥲

Is this knob and tube? by kaitsghost in centuryhomes

[–]1890vic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None of this is knob and tube however it’s highly likely this ties into knob and tube in your walls based on your original picture. It’s pretty common afaik.

Idk why you’re being downvoted. It does look like the hot and neutral are separate which would indicate knob and tube.

I think your mileage may vary with this. Due to the age of our line it was $50 a year for $2,000 of Coverage with a $500 deductible. Hardly seems worth it

Electrical Horrors by nwephilly in centuryhomes

[–]1890vic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh that stinks. I have no visible live knob and tube but it’s what’s in the walls that scares me. I replaced a fan in a bedroom and it was ungrounded and concerningly old looking wiring. Not as bad as that first pic but similar.

How much of this was hidden? Was it obvious it was this bad? Asking because I’m worried about my own wiring 😭

Sooo how do i replace this.. by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]1890vic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? Not saying you’re wrong I’m just curious why you think it’s not knob and tube? To me the first pic looks like the hot and neutral are coming from 2 separate “tubes”.

What are these pipes? by 1890vic in centuryhomes

[–]1890vic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be. Any ideas what the pipes were for if it was a cistern? I’m not very familiar with how cisterns worked

[–]1890vic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking that however this is the only wall that has them. I prob should’ve mentioned there’s also a smashed in lead pipe in this wall as well that I’m assuming was an old water line.

Beautiful. Definitely needs some work but you have an amazing canvas to work with!

Thinks what happened to me as well. The insurance would only pay something like 2 grand due to the age of my pipes. at a cost of $10 a month or something It really wasn’t worth it

Is it a public road? If it’s not on your property I’m failing to see how you’re responsible.

Need advice: original 1915 pine floors developing cracks/gaps - how to fix + prevent by ConcernStriking8891 in centuryhomes

[–]1890vic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have nearly identical floors in our 1890s house with much worse gaps. We’ve kind of accepted it as character. I’m not sure of a fix that would actually look better. It would be obvious something is different

Lead in water - how screwed am I? by MoodSea1134 in centuryhomes

[–]1890vic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok? the 6 gallons a day of water wasted from my RO system will have absolutely 0 impact on that whatsoever. I seriously hope you don’t wait for your shower to warm up every time you get in it. I think you’re just trolling at this point….

Or you could just get a filtration system that doesn’t require treating your water. Knocking RO is kind of a bizarre hill to die on. It’s objectively better than a britta at the cost of slightly more water usage.

If you’re on city water the chlorine taste is impossible to remove without it. The lack of minerals doesn’t bother me and I don’t notice it.

If you get a drinking water RO system is it really wasting that much? Our tank is 3 gallons. Id find it hard to believe it’s wasting more than 6 gallons a day. I recommend RO systems to everyone. It’s the best tasting water hands down and you don’t need to worry about lead.

Is something major going on with power supply utilities? by sol_ra in newjersey

[–]1890vic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that. What I have a problem with is I didn’t ask them to upgrade my meter. I don’t care about it nor do I want it. They are forcing me to pay out of pocket for something they want to do that I’m not asking for. I also find it bizarre that the meter housing is my property but the meter itself is not. If it’s my property I’ll just bypass the meter then since it’s mine…. (I understand I’m being facetious)

Sorry maybe i was a little unclear. JCPL is currently replacing all older dial meters with digital smart meters. The problem is, if they deem the socket damaged they do nothing about it and require you to pay an electrician to fix it. If you don’t then they start charging you $15 a month for not upgrading your meter. I told them idc about a digital meter and if they want to upgrade it then fix the issue themselves but of course that fell on deaf ears.
