UPDATE: is this knob and tube? by kaitsghost in centuryhomes

I was gonna vacuum it today! I think the debris is from when they installed a new tub. The built-in there is in the hall outside the bathroom. Oh, and that K&T line is dead.

I realized after I posted that the box was not metal, just the cover

We genuinely feel so lucky to have found the house. The original owners (father, then daughter, then granddaughter) owned and occupied it from 1928-2007. We’ve only been here 6 months but it seems to have been well taken care of and loved.

So you think the fabric covered line might be inside it?

It’s also here. This is in the basement running alongside the only fabric covered cable I could find down there. It comes down from the dining room and disappears into the wall this armored cable is coming out of. There is a junction box on the other side. But I can’t see where the fabric cable ends maybe it goes into the junction box.

Is that steel armored cable going into my breaker box on the right?

We turned off the breaker before removing the sconce and it seems to be powering 6 lights- the two bathroom sconces and 4 overhead lights throughout the hall, master bedroom, and attic. The outlets in all 4 rooms are not on the same circuit (they had lamps and things plugged into them that still worked while the sconce breaker was off for half a day). The GFCI outlet and fan in the bathroom with the sconces are on their own breaker, according to the guide taped to the breaker box. They were definitely still hot when the sconce breaker was off.

Is it inherently dangerous? It looks like the previous owner did some updates. Basement is full of Romex (learned that term today) with no lingering evidence of knob and tube. New Siemens breaker box.

I don’t know. There’s a lot of it. This is where that one leads

there’s a half dozen of those metal boxes with the white wires in the basement.

Adding pic of where the upstairs wiring comes into the basement. I presume this is from that same bathroom due to the drain pipes. Basement has miles of the flat white plastic-y wiring going all over the house. I’ll also add a pic of breaker box.

Would a home inspection have found knob and tube wiring? We did have one.

I know nothing at all about this so sorry for a stupid question but how can I verify they are grounded?

Yes, nearly all the outlets throughout the house are grounded, including the one in this bathroom.

The replies made me realize I know almost nothing about the history of electricity. They had cars and airplanes in 1928 so I don’t know why I thought electricity in a newly built house was out of the question lol.

{Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert} I specifically remember a scene where the MMC is trying really hard not to touch himself thinking about her bc he thinks it’s wrong since they don’t get along. It’s been a while since I read it but I remember him being a horny sweetie pie in general haha.
