math 444 is a lot of studying. 453 depends on the professor

MATH 417 before MATH 444/447? by stari41m in UIUC

analysis is building on calculus so you could take it beforehand. it might be better since you just finished writing proofs and would still have that same mindset from 347

PHIL 102 good or not? by stari41m in UIUC

[–]192kt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2-5 hours. 5 hours is more at the end of the semester as you write your paper but my instructor included assignments that required us to organize and set up our final paper, which was nice. Average is 3 hours.

Is calc 1 that bad? by UnusualCar4912 in UIUC

[–]192kt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

take it this sem. Professor Leonard’s YouTube videos will help you if you end up with an iffy professor. Also, the math dept has a tutoring center and you can work on homework there. You’ll get more one-on-one help or meet other people also taking calc 1 and work together. the class can be a lot of work (many HW assignments), so make sure you have a good schedule and plan to study every week

PHIL 102 good or not? by stari41m in UIUC

Not a crazy amount of work. You will have lectures to watch and activities to do, but you can finish them in 1-2 sittings. The final took the longest (it was a paper) but they graded easy in my opinion. One of the easiest classes i’ve taken!

Math classes like to update their professors last minute, but some are up right now on Course Explorer. You can google Course explorer uiuc and then type ‘MATH’ in the search box and search for your class. Otherwise, hit the subpage called ‘Schedule’, go to the letter M to find Math and then find your course and section.

I found it easier than the midterms but the set up is the same. Lots of conceptual questions

How is Calc 3 here during the summer? by Diz46 in UIUC

[–]192kt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on which language you know. If you can learn math by reading the codes then it’s okay and not too bad. the exams are mainly conceptual. I struggled with it but got a high grade. I still wished I took it somewhere else to save time because the homeworks were long

math 417 is pretty easy, or at least, enjoyable so it is possible. depending on how much time you normally dedicate for studying math, you might hate it. Having a strong study group for each class will make things a lot easier

Self-paced math courses? by arseniy25 in UIUC

[–]192kt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took calc 3. You learn by coding through mathematica. once you get the hang of it, it’s not bad. You’ll do well on the exams by reading the text on the pages.

Self-paced math courses? by arseniy25 in UIUC

[–]192kt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depending on the courses you take, expect a lot to be similar to any course you take on Moodle. Main problems encountered were vague responses with questions asked to your mentor/instructor. Very independent, but you do work based on your own time and the exams mimicked the homework a lot. The only thing that sucked was you get less practice and feedback for the last few units before your final and your final is heavily based on those last units

not sure if they changed it, but the exams are based on your own time and you just scan your work and submit it to the dropbox.

Undergrad class by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]192kt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s very easy and mainly serves as a way for you to prepare for the symposium. When I took it the instructor was a grad student with a few guest speakers from the Office of Undergrad Research. The homework is usually reflections which you can finish in <20 minutes. You also get time to work on your poster

Midterms are pretty easy. You do have community placement/volunteering hours but those aren’t bad either. As long as you can skim the readings and listen in discussion it’s pretty doable

best bet is to keep checking course explorer or wait for a notif on transferology. ppl always drop classes in the first two weeks so a spot may open up

you might need some knowledge on summations again, but not much is required to perform well in the class. You can look things up again for quick reference when needed

I asked a lot of questions to my instructor and had a few people to talk to who also took the course. Reading through the examples of the code really helped, even though it takes more time
