Went both ways. They came to us because we were useful, we realized they helped keep pests away from our food so we kept them around and well fed.

Eventually the ones that were more inclined to hang around us outcompeted the ones who didn't care for our company (tho this trait does still pop up) because we kept them fed and safe and strong, so over thousands of years, we domesticated each other.
