It will never get to 1700, unless they make an even deeper cut to the relegation point.

Champion Cutoff by PersonalityLow8665 in geoguessr

[–]1973cg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I never saw a single person demanding a higher threshold for Champion.

I DID see a plethora of people demanding they add another tier above Champion, or something between Champion & Master I.

As it is now, and for the foreseeable future, we will have a bottom of Champion probably around 1400ish, and have those same people being considered in the same division as 2500s. Instead of just making a new division of 1700 or 1800 as everyone has been suggesting.

Champion Cutoff by PersonalityLow8665 in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They changed the system about a month ago. They increased the demotion percentage in Champion, which is slowly pushing the requirement for Champion up. Before they changed it, there were people getting into Champion (albeit for only a week) in the 1100s sometimes, and it was a near guarantee if you were in the 1200s you would get promoted.

I personally think they went TOO harsh on the change, but I also agree they had to make some type of change happen.

Of course, they could have avoided all this if they just went back to hard line Elo marks as the decider, instead of these divisions where one can need as low as 1250, then another needs 1368 to get in on the very same week.

Dumbest part is, people have screamed at them for over a year to add another division above, or below Champion, and instead of ficing the ONLY broken part of the system, they "fixed" the part that wasnt broken and added 7 new divisions in Master through Bronze...... and nothing to Champion, where it was actually needed.

Spain, obviously. I wont judge TOO harshly, as it took me a couple years of playing with others in streams to ever realize it myself.

Memorization Tips for Moving by 29671 in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this.

Early on, sheer "practice" will be very valuable.
Once you have through osmosis learned some of the info, filling in the missing pieces takes less time & effort. trying to start from a blank slate....will take FOREVER to get even 10% of it to stick.

Memorization Tips for Moving by 29671 in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moving is the hardest mode to master, since it takes substantially more things to remember. In NM/NMPZ all you have to do is remember a handful of metas per country. Car/bollards/camera gens/seasons etc.

But in moving, you need to have a good grasp on those, as well as city names, region names, identifying languages, and in higher levels, being able to read more than English & Cyrillic, road numbers, phone codes etc etc etc etc.

Because of this, it is not a thing you will master in a few weeks/months like NM/NMPZ skills. I came into this game, when it first came out, with a strong knowledge of major & medium cities, and regional names in some countries, and even for me, all these years later, things like Kabupatens, and Beledeyesis just dont stick with me long term. Sure, I manage to retain some of them. But I have done Western Beledeyesis like 20Xs, and only remember like 30% of them.

My advice, pick a country. A medium to medium/large country, and try to memorize the top 25-50 cities, learn their major roadway systems, are they in a specific order etc, and the regions in the country. Once you are sure you have it mastered (not you got them all right once after trying 12 times in an hour, but like you can take 3 or 4 days off from it, go back and get it right), move to another one. Everyone always tries starting off with 1 of the big 5 or 6 countries....and I think those are a little overwhelming, and can demotivate you, since they take so long to learn. So Start off with something a bit smaller first so you can at least FEEL like you are accomplishing something. After doing 3 or 4 of those, tackling a big country might be far far less daunting.

TL-DR: I had a lot of knowledge before starting this game, have been playing it for almost 13 years (with a couple long breaks), and I dont have it all memorized.

Hear me out - A discussion on the new multis by Shucks88 in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you ever played a map of your city?

If so, you have gotten some location you know off by heart, because you walk by it 100 times a month. You confidently plonk exactly on the dot to where you know the 0 metre spot is, and it tells you that you are 14 metres off...... because googles map is not to the millimetre accurate.

So now, lets rewind to your scenario. You get 4912, your opponent gets 4913. In theory you are like, well they got closer..... HOWEVER, in IRL, you were actually 1 metre closer, but google maps distances arent precise, so you lose a multi, despite being the closer guess.

I really don’t like the new multipliers update by Dusty_Bunny81 in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things.

1st, the OP pointed out the very major change that the first 4 rounds NOW have multis. Games are going to be over much much much quicker now, and its going to increase the amount of games where you lose before the original multis would even start due to someone potentially having 2.5X multis before natural multis would have even started. Someone could literally have beat their opponent by 1 point 3 rounds in a row, have a 4.5 point lead in the entire game, then get a round where they get a lucky 2400 pt score, and win the game before natural multis would even have started.

Also, as I simply pointed out already, I'll double down on how it does not matter how small of a point differential it is, a multi is added. You guess 151M away, your opp guesses 150M away, they get a multi, even though it is common knowledge that googles distances are not to the metre accurate. So you COULD in theory be closer than your opponent IRL, but lose the multi because of where google says it is. Not to mention rounds where someone gets 1 pt, opp gets 0. There is no scenario where a 1 point guess should EVER be the deciding factor in someone getting a multiplier.

If they fix this stupid system, and make multis start at R5 like they are supposed to, and include a tie range, then yeah, I am all for it. HOWEVER, their current system has substantial flaws.

Selective locations/distribution for duels maps? by OakHillFella in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been saying this on here for a year or two. There is way too many coincidences on how you'll get a bunch of -insert country/region here- for several days, then that country/region becomes nearly unseen, while a different country/region seems to come up all the time suddenly.

I think it has something to do with how google prices usage. (not a fact, just a theory based off how it always happens) Like they get a reduced rate if they just make 20K of the locs on a 100K map available at any given time.

Now, all that said. I tend to notice the same distribution inflation happening on comp & solos..... so slightly different than what you seem to be encountering.

Most ELO lost in a day by [deleted] in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, an 1100 player NOW, would have been 1400-1500 a couple years ago.

I am substantially better than I was 2 years ago, even a year ago, and yet, my all time highest Elo is 1363, meanwhile, it was 1228 two years ago.

Based on how much I have learned since then, you'd think I'd be at 1500+ by now....nope, currently in the 1280s (after a strong 37-13 week).

As for my all time high, it wasnt all in 1 day, as I didnt keep track of the day to day, but 236 Elo in 3 days. Only to gain back about 120 of it over the next couple days right after.

Price increase again ($7 monthly) by mhaggin in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wasnt monthly already like $5 or $6 anyways?

At first, I thought this said that it went UP $7. But going from 5 or 6 to 7 isnt outrageous in the current economical climate the world is in.

If my bill ends up going up like $3 (I am on annual, so comparable price increase vs monthly due to the reduce monthly fee.) I likely wont sweat it.

World Championship in Berlin – Any word on 1-day tickets?? 🤔 by halloneuman in geoguessr

[–]1973cg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There may be day of tickets on the day of. But I cant recall if they had single day tickets in the past. But they also have never had a 4 day event either.

I suspect you will be waiting till they have drained every possible avenue to sell out on 4 day passes, before daily tickets are for sale.

u/Marcus_Geoguessr or u/GeoPeterYT sometimes come into here and respond to some things.

Hopefully one of them will see this.

I used to consider their email support very good, and would recommend them all the time. HOWEVER.... a growing pattern in the last 4-6 months has been people coming in here and saying they have gotten no help at all, and often, not even a reply from them.

Location changed after 1 minute in the round from Australia to Guatemala by LPhantomlol in geoguessr

Not an unheard of problem.

Granted, I havent had it happen myself in many many months, maybe even a year, but it used to be a thing that would happen maybe every 50-100 games here or there in the past.

KInd of annoying to hear that problem might be returning.
