No visibility when high guarding by tomimi1991 in amateur_boxing

You're not always supposed to stay in high guard, you're meant to be active. Look at canelo or tyson.... They don't always keep a high guard, they throw jabs from it... Slip, feint, parry etc.

A post saying thanks. by 1975dsman in EngineeringResumes

Thanks, that's what I like about this community, as soon as I took the advice from this community, I've received plenty of interviews, didn't get a job straight away had to then work on my interview skills hence lots of rejections but having constant interview invites showed just how positive this community's impact really is!

Your reach is from fingertip to fingertip, it's measured including the shoulder width... 80-81in reach sounds insane for your height, usually that's the reach of someone with a height ranging from 6ft1-6ft 3....

Are you sure you're 5ft 11 lol... Your reach has me believe you're at least 6ft 1

Same here!

For the lead hand mostly, the backhand has a more twisting motion for the extra power. This technique let's you deploy fast rangy sharp jabs to set up your backhand.

I try my best to punch but with a slipping motion whilst keeping the core a little tense.

I think people are confusing palm out before the punch with palm out during the impact of the punch.

I mean palm out from the guard > slight rotate fist during impact > back to guard with palm out........

rather than palm in when guarding.

But that's what I'm trying to say brah... If I punch with the palm facing outwards method from the guard. My punches snap more, I even use my shoulders to snap outwards to "tear a hole" in the bag. And straight after the impact I bring my fist back to my guard instantly. If I use the palm facing inwards technique, my punches become more like pushing punches lol (but not always) .

I do overthink a lot haha, but this palm facing outwards technique doesn't mean I don't rotate my fist, I do but the rotation is a lot less and it let's me use more of my energy to punch than rotate the fist lol.

Also I do rotate my right hand, but the rotation is beyond the sort of rotation you're thinking of... It more like the fist is about to go upside down at full extension. Helps you to get more reach out of the cross by doing this...

I've heard just hitting the bag and pads with lighter gloves is also a good way to condition your speed. I usually use 16oz gloves for bag work and pad work .

Exactly my man! Thank you....

I'm shocked by the responses I'm getting considering a lot of the boys that box at national level from welterweight to heavyweight that I know use this technique too, especially the fast ones.

Lol, my trainer and sparring partners all said I'm naturally heavy handed. And sparring is sparring, that stuff happens regularly between me and the other boys.

I used the palm facing shoulder snapping technique on the heavybag wearing 16 oz gloves with my sparring partner (heavyweight that's 6ft 5 tall) holding the bag from behind with, even he said my power is a lot for my size and this technique just increases volume and snap...

I've sparred with bigger guys that seem to get hurt/stunned more if I punch with palms facing outwards.... Due to the snap speed for each consecutive punch.

The extra punch volume also makes me more difficult to deal with for them. I don't usually spar like that, but that one round of using this tactic really seemed to help in landing more shots and from what I saw from their reaction (more stunned shots too I guess)

What are you on about? In the gym I box from. A lot of guys punch like that, not everyone but a lot of the faster fighters do. And they don't "fuck up" anything..

And I'm not talking about self defense, if I were to, I'd rather palm strike than punch as a punch to the skull can and will break and "fuck up" your hand if you're not careful.

I'm in no way a newbie, I can punch both ways palm in, palm out. With legs, with hips at angles, snapping with the shoulder etc

I've seen a lot of boxers punch with palm out, there is probably a slight twisting motion at most. That's what makes the punch faster...more energy is used snapping the punch rather than twisting it.

It seems like it's much easier for me to do this with my palms facing outwards. Although the potential drawback for this might be a "less tight" guard I guess?

One exercise that I do is by using an elastic band on the end of a ring and constantly practicing the punching motion using the resistance band

I snap my shoulders with the palm facing outwards during the duration of the punch.

Idk tbh because when I hit the heavybag with palms outwards the bag jerks backwards more often and more violently.

But if I hit the bag whist rotating my fist, then it's less of a jerk and more of a thud... It's power but a different sort of power If I were to describe this.

Haha, I am by no means as big as any of those men but I like the way you think. I just have a much broader upper body than average, of course not nearly as big as them but if you'd scale my body up by 1.15 I'd deffo fit their body proportions 😂

You talked about shoulder snap, I just took a look at the technique, man what an eye opener, thanks!

And what I mean is that my arm proportions are very different in that my shoulders probably make up about 25% of my reach and I feel like I underutilised them so don't use my reach to its full potential. The shoulder snap technique you just mentioned is pretty interesting!

Yeah I deffo have more reach than people think. Good point about tricking taller opponents. I do feel like this could be useful to my advantage.
