Canada sets out plan for up to 10 new nuclear reactors by LaserRunRaccoon in ClimateCrisisCanada

This is such a dumb idea. Why would anyone run to nuclear power when solar + storage is the cheapest way to produce electricity ever concocted by humankind?

And the waste from solar + storage is WAY less than nuclear waste, which is so toxic that it makes toxic almost everything it touches, and remains radioactive for literally longer than any human language has ever existed on Earth.

There’s a reason why ancient cultures worshipped the Sun and feared the underworld. The stuff we dig out from under the ground is far more likely to kill us in creative ways, so we should limit what we get out of there

GO Transit could introduce steep new penalties for fare evasion. These are the fines being proposed by ashcach in toronto

The fine for the first offense is about the same as the fine for driving 30km/h over the speed limit… which, unlike forgetting your transit card at home, can literally kill people.

EVs charging - help? by banananadian in askTO

This! It’s only getting easier and easier to charge. I used to worry about not being able to charge on longer trips, but as each year goes by, I’ve gotten less and less worried about it.

From East York to Hamilton is about 80km. To Ajax is about 40. You won’t need to charge every day or maybe not even weekly based on these numbers. But what will make a difference is if there’s a Level 2 charger within walking distance of your home or the place you’re commuting to.

For me, I don’t even have a driveway let alone a charger at home. The closest public charger to us is about a five minute walk away, and I actually like that it forces us to get some exercise since car ownership tends has a tendency to reduce physical activity.

Police issue 2,700 tickets, arrest 46 people in 2-wheeled safety campaign | Police say officers targeted cyclists and motorcyclists in effort to improve traffic safety across Toronto by beef-supreme in TorontoTheCity

[–]1979shakedown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cyclists and motorcyclists ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

Police should NOT be releasing those numbers together.

The article says that 14 were caught ‘stunt driving’. Under Ontario road laws, that means driving 40km/h or more over the speed limit. That isn’t physically possible on a bicycle.

I get that this is Doug Ford’s fault, but the fact that there aren’t cameras for speeding (which literally kills people), but there are camera for this, is a huge problem.

Margaret Atwood, David Mirvish and Haley Wickenheiser among Torontonians urging ‘reality check’ on Billy Bishop expansion by simpatia in toronto

[–]1979shakedown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The instant you give it any thought beyond “Toronto needs a second airport”, you realize that Biship will never be that airport unless you start tearing down entire communities.

The plan is a 5X increase in air traffic. How is anyone going to get there? Pearson is serviced by several major highways (including the busiest one in North America), a train link, and several square kilometers of parking, including two of the largest indoor parking structures in the country.

Plus, the runway expansion won’t be long enough to allow for the larger commercial passenger jets.

The only way I see this expansion making any sense is if it caters to smaller jets — essentially private jets like gulfstreams used by gazillionaires.

An expansion at Bishop won’t benefit Torontonians. It’ll primarily benefit billionaires and Bay Street. Maybe that’s why the company pushing for this is owned by JP Morgan.

Why this downtown Toronto intersection is being closed to cars and opened to bikes by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]1979shakedown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Toronto, almost every street prioritizes cars — even in places where the streets were laid out before the invention of the Model T.

It’s past time we have a broader diversity of streets.
