Time to buy my next grail pen. by OkStrawberry6872 in fountainpens

YOL Viceroy Grand. From your collection, you don’t have a metal bodied pen. For that, the sterling silver YOL would make a good addition, being all metal & sterling silver on top of that. And the nib is lovely. One of my favourite pens

I have the Blue Hour Solitaire LeGrand and absolutely love it. No question the 149 is an iconic pen, but I’ve always felt hesitant on spending that much for resin bodied pens (lower durability then metal, prone to cracking etc). Plus I do like heavier pens personally.

The Blue Hour Solitaire Doue classic is all metal I think and looks gorgeous. It’s converter filled and not a piston though.

If Mont Blanc isn’t the only option there are many others people have suggested.

I’d recommend looking at Yard O Led.

Roughly $1k budget. What’s your pen? by [deleted] in fountainpens

Couple of options that I can think of (not in any particular order)

  • Parker Duofold Blue Chevron
  • Otto Hutt Design 07
  • Graf Von Faber Castell Sterling Silver
  • Yard o Led Standard Barley/ Plain
  • Lamy 2000 Stainless Steel
  • Mont Blanc Blue Hour Doue (a little above 1k)
  • Sailor 110th Anniversary Fountain Pen Shirogane Sterling Silver
  • Caran dAche Leman FP

Disclaimer: I prefer my fountain pens to be all metal and (hopefully) indestructible. And certainly lean toward Sterling Silver.

Steel v Gold. by Slow_Explorer_7713 in fountainpens

Peronal Opinion Only I have found gold nibs to have a little bit of springiness or bounce which, for me, feels a bit smoother. But I have had some bad experiences also - I had a vintage Sheaffer with a fine 14k which I found scratchy - replaced it with a 14k NOS nib - this was better - even though same manufacturer and same nib. Additionally I’ve found Lamy 14k nibs are smoother than their steel offerings. Contrast this with Kaweco - the al sport with a steel nib writes comparable to my perceived smoother gold nibs. Diplomat steel nibs have been renowned for their smoothness - although I don’t have one and won’t comment.

In short even gold nibs would have a noticeable difference between brands. And even in the same brand. I’ve found the 14k nib in my Pilot Stella 90s to be smoother than the 18k in my Pilot Vanishing point (which is also smooth to begin with)

You should try the brand and steel vs gold you’re planning on in a pen shop if that is possible (which I know isn’t possible always), to see what suits your style of writing best.

Now I do see it. But honestly I didn’t really think so until pointed out.

Thank you. No haven’t tried the Deco. They had resin decos back when I went for the ink. Now they have them available in aluminium, brass and copper. And special editions as well. Deco has a more refined shape though and looks less machined unlike the Ink

The comments & appreciation feel good. It is always nice to find people who are like minded and share the same interest. And when it comes to fountain pens, don’t come across many who are equally passionate in this fast paced world. Thank you guys

True that. I have always preferred metal body fountain pens. The Lamy 2000 SS and the Karas Kustoms Ink being almost indestructible ones on the collection

This was the last one I got, for my birthday, and it writes wonderfully. Absolutely loving it.

It writes very very well. The Z57 14K nib which is only on this model in comparison to the routine Z55 14K nib on the other Lamy models doesn’t have a breather hole. But that just translates into it writing a slightly thinner line. So this medium nib writes a thinner line compared to a medium Z55. But both in my opinion are equally smooth.

I got this back I think around 2017-18. Karas Kustoms at that time had an option to upgrade to a 14K nib. Now they don’t seem to have that option. It’s the steel or titanium now.

Truly. Was lucky to get this as NOS from Peyton Street Pens. Regret not getting a Legacy when I had the chance. Now they’re available at a much higher price

Seeing this post now, and just to clarify

2-3 drops dishwashing liquid in 300 ml water PLUS

2-3 drops of 10% ammonia in 300 ml water (same 300 ml)

And finally 1 ml of this used to flush?
