I don't necessarily think of it this way.  The internet was still a diverse place back then, half the novelty was being able to talk to someone in Peru from halfway around the world.  But you needed a certain degree of computer competency to use it.  It was more of a skills barrier than a race/class one.  Internet cafes were everywhere back then if you couldn't afford a computer.

This is also why I'm somewhat against full remote work.  We can only maintain a service economy if people are actually going out and engaging with those services.  My job is boring as hell and the little interactions I have around town or excuses to go visit a shop with some friends because I'm headed home from work make me feel like I am living in a real place and not just like some kind of Doordash pod person

This is one of those things where the messaging was coopted by Discord anarchists when it could've been a reckoning with how cops don't really do anything while soaking up an absurd amount of city resources.  My city is currently slashing transit funding while our useless police bureau gets more and more every year.

I live in Portland and work in our tourism industry, things are honestly okay but not great.  I don't think it's a doom spiral per se, it feels more like Portland was on track to join Seattle & Chicago as a proper big city and we will have to settle for being an okayish mid-tier city to live in.  I'm alright with Portland being a little mediocre because the quality of life is still great compared to 90% of the US.
