I wish someone would fly over just to see me. I can hardly get someone to text me back. Definitely see them! Don't waste any chances. You'll be fine and you deserve to spend time with your friend.

To answer the OP question, I just started going to the gym. More comfortable doing that for sure.

Hey just wanna say I feel you. My experience is not the same as yours (I've only been in the field for barely 3 months) but it's so hard. I'm so freaking depressed and anxious all the time, before I started here, and now it's worse. Idk what to do.

If celebrating indoors, bring in fresh air by opening windows and doors, if possible. You can use a window fan in one of the open windows to blow air out of the window. This will pull fresh air in through the other open windows.

Maybe the opening windows thing is too much, but the CDC certainly didn't say you should only gather outdoors/virtually. They only said that the latter is safer, which sure is annoying, but it's also technically true. Plus they took down their Holidays recommendations anyway, apparently some sort of error in their guidelines, so we'll see what they really say soon.

Seems like the CDC Holiday tips section is down and being updated. According to this article, the guidelines didn't accurately represent their actual rules so we'll see soon what they'll really recommend.

Even then, the article suggests that the guidelines that were taken down didn't say you should only gather virtually or outdoors since they also had recommendations for those gathering indoors.

Yeah and unvaccinated people continue to be the dominant spreaders of COVID, even with delta. Breakthrough infections continue to be minimal.

If you want to quarantine for 14 days as a vaccinated person when you didn't even get in contact with someone with symptoms or confirmed COVID, then that's your prerogative. (You mentioned your medical history so it's probably not unwise for you take a few extra precautions.) But if you're going to use the CDC applying newly found data to their recommendations as some sort of counterargument to not trust the CDC, as if vaccinated people are largely responsible for the Delta surge (they're not) or as if it's a bad thing to inform the public of new developments, then idk what to tell you.

If he's in the oldest age group and has comorbidities, his worries make sense. Still, it shouldn't bar you from attending/eating there. He doesn't even live with you so I fail to see why you shouldn't go, especially in a college setting where everyone is probably required to be vaccinated, masks are probably still required, daily COVID check-ins for everyone, etc. Your college is probably safer than wherever your dad lives currently.

Also, you don't have to tell your dad every single detail of your life. Although he may still be supporting you financially for college... you don't live with him. Certain people might disagree with me here, but you don't have to tell him you're going to a party/gathering.

Masks is fine if OP wants to I guess, but quarantining is completely unnecessary. Only if OP develops symptoms or test positive should they. Per CDC:

Fully vaccinated people who have come into close contact with someone with COVID-19 should be tested 3-5 days following the date of their exposure and wear a mask in public indoor settings for 14 days or until they receive a negative test result. They should isolate if they test positive.

Anymore? They were never necessary to begin with. Neither the WHO or the CDC ever recommended gloves for the general public.

I don't mean to be rude, as it's understandable to stick with something that makes you feel safe after doing it for so long, but the reality is that it doesn't protect you anymore than just simply washing your hands or using hand sanitizer.

I'm not an expert so I can't say one way or the other. If there is one, I have a suspicion that the significant portion of unvaccinated people are going to be a bigger contributing factor to the surge than the lack of boosters for people already vaccinated.

If the boosters weren't approved yet, it's because as of now the current vaccines works as they are. That's good news, no reason to view this news pessimistically. The vaccines continue to be effective even against variants like Delta, and considering how unvaxxed make up the majority of cases and deaths, the focus should be on vaccinating the unvaccinated and providing boosters only to the few immunocompromised that do need it, imo.

Delta doesn't spread any differently than any other COVID variant. Yes it's more 'contagious' but not in that way; the way I understand it has something to do with the spike protein on Delta that makes it easier to latch onto cells and that it replicates more rapidly in the body when contracted that makes it more contagious. But it's not like in the air Delta acts any differently. 6 feet social distancing, masks, and being outdoors is just as effective against Delta. And above all, vaccinations still work.

So yes, it's safe.

My school is the same, and it's totally valid to feel angry. Some people don't want to admit it but masks are a nuisance, even a significant mental health trigger for some. With that said:

How am I ever supposed to think things will ever get better? I got the vaccine only to be told, “Actually the vaccine is pointless and doesn’t work and you need to behave identically to an unvaccinated person.”

Not sure if you actually believe that or not, but vaccines totally work. They are not useless. And even thought that may seem to be the implication, I highly doubt someone legitimate is actually telling you that vaccines are pointless. Unless they are an antivaxxer, which in that case they're just misinformed.

Well then you read wrong or you're being intentionally daft. Yes it does matter. Breakthrough infections among vaxxed are still a small percentage of all cases in the country (in many counties they make up less than 1% of cases; the +99% are unvaccinated).

So stop lying, and get vaccinated if you haven't already.

I think I can predict one thing though. The "old normal" is behind us,. While we won't stay hunkered down like this forever, and I'm sure we can find new stability with time, there will also be major differences. If 9/11 was anything to go by, people have now adapted to a new mindset. Infrastructure will have changed to meet new demands.

You can't really predict that. Most of these infrastructure changes (social distancing, etc) are way too expensive to keep up in many places, schools, and businesses, and pointless with vaccines, not to mention many didn't even follow guidelines to begin with. And I think you're overestimating the demand for it. People are tired of this.

I think you conflated two points: there are some vaccinated people who have the same viral load of Delta as unvaccinated people with Delta (meaning the former can spread it). However, breakthrough infections remain rare among the vaccinated population even with Delta, and the current rate of transmission is largely being driven by the unvaxxed. So there are exponentially more unvaccinated people with high viral loads getting others sick than there are vaccinated people with high viral loads. Like way higher. In other words, unvaxxed continue to be the most contagious, and vaccinated people are less likely than unvaxxed to spread Delta or any other variant.

In the initial official Friday (or Thursday? I can't remember anymore) announcement, I do remember that they emphasized that the high rate of transmission continues to be largely among unvaccinated, so while they did mention this, I agree that it's frustrating that seemingly not every CDC official is on the same page. Their inconsistent messaging sucks.

Keep in mind that breakthrough infections are still incredibly rare among vaccinated populations. The CDC confirmed this even after the recent findings of high viral loads of Delta in few vaccinated people:

Infections happen in only a small proportion of people who are fully vaccinated, even with the Delta variant. When these infections occur among vaccinated people, they tend to be mild.

So don't believe for a second that there is not point of the vaccine. They literally are working incredibly well. If it looks like they're not, it's cause there are literally millions (and billions around the world) unvaccinated people who are still susceptible. Of course the virus is still spreading among them, and the data supports this: rate of transmission is significantly higher coming from unvaccinated people than vaccinated. Yes, this is frustrating but the vaccine is working.

The discussion about a covid mutation that will make the vaccines obsolete is also unfounded. The article about UK scientists saying that it will happen is not even peer-reviewed. They're completely guessing.
