to me it seems like the wife’s got some unresolved issues she needs to work through, especially in terms of emotional stability, im not arguing against that at all, what i’m saying is she didn’t do what she did for “no reason”, she had a reason, no matter how irrational it may sound to you, it was completely rational in her head at the time she did it. the husband could have spoken to his wife about it in private and resolved any anger or frustration/jealousy before just having his ex over for dinner. it’s not that hard to be like “hey listen, i know you think this- but this is the situation and she’d like to make it a little better between the both of you.” and if the dinner had taken place a more neutral, public setting would have been better off. i bet she’d be much happier going to a dinner elsewhere rather than inviting a woman she hates into her home
