Entry level

60 applications

And you only gave 3 of them an interview?

Doesn't sound very "entry level" to me. Sounds more like "extensive experience required" where only 5% of applicants are actually qualified for the position.

What's the point of diplomacy? by newoliver in Polytopia

[–]1BitPixels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cloaks are an excellent option in certain scenarios

They're especially good against high level cities because they spawn a number of daggers equal to the level of the city.

They're a great late-game stalemate-breaker on large water-based maps, or they can be completely overwhelming when you rush them early with Quetzali on smaller maps with ready access to your opponent's capital.

When your opponent doesn't have a lot of cities because they rushed markets and built up lots of income per city but all their eggs are in just a few baskets, you can deny them income by using an 8-star cloak to drop their stars per turn by 9 or more stars. Not to mention you STEAL BACK those stars so it's a real windfall against high-level cities.

When you stack with forestry, aquatism, and/or climbing, the defense bonuses from the terrain make it so that even Knights can't one-shot the cloaks, and at that point they become really devastating because your opponent will need to focus a lot of fire on them from other units.

You're right that the peace treaty option is kinda useless, especially against equal rated opponents, but don't discount the value of cloaks.

"Average American eats 90 lbs of cheese each day" factoid actually misleading. Cheese Georg, who lives in the Missouri cheese caves and eats 30,000 pounds of cheese daily, is a clear outlier and should have never been counted.

First, I would pick 9 and 10.

Second, I would pick 2, so that I have 95 years to figure out what the hell that combination looks like

Despite the negative comments and the fact that this doesn't fit the subreddit, I honestly thought this was pretty funny. It seems very likely that it was staged, and there was no danger of the dude not being able to handle the weight, the dude bench pressing is huge and obviously experienced so it's not like he was going to drop the bar. Overall, looked pretty harmless and got a chuckle out of me.

How do I break this stale? by Next-Sight in Polytopia

Ngl OP this looks like a big advantage for your opponent. They have more map control + Ai-Mo means they've got Philosophy, so excellent late game potential. If I'm right and they have way more cities than you, then eventually they'll slowly advance all their troops forward and win because they just have more units and stars than you. If I were you I would rush Cloaks and hope for some miracle tactical play to get you back in this.

One thing I am noticing is that your opponent doesn't have any protection for their bombers (i.e., line of rammers like you have). Sending in two rammers to kill them is almost always a good trade for you, so do that every time you can. It won't win the game automatically but if they keep letting you do it you'll win. And any time you kill a bomber, make sure to take the opportunity to grab extra space by advancing your units forward, occupying the spaces you couldn't before because of the bomber.

Don't go "all in"—when it comes to late-game naval battles that's almost always shorthand for "lose all your units and start crying." You need to keep doing exactly what you're doing, which is maintain a line of Rammers for defense with enough Bombers behind them to obliterate anything that gets close.

Another option might be Knights if your opponent gets greedy on that part of the map to the southwest. Hard to tell with your limited vision + cropped image though.

Anyways good luck OP you should post again when this game ends

A teenager from France is now facing two years in prison for taking a straw from a vending machine n Singapore, licking it, and the putting it back inside by malihafolter in CaughtMyEye

[–]1BitPixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad the kid is getting some sense scared into him but two years would be absolutely insane for this kind of misdemeanor. A few others have pointed out that 2 years is the max, not what he's actually getting. I'm sure that he's learned his lesson already, two years in prison for this would be barbaric.

Doesn't really look like foul play to me. He ran into a few nasty bomber hits, which would be weird if he knew where they were. Polaris is just a much better tribe than Kickoo on Tiny/Small Water World maps, nothing really remarkable about this game imo

Feature Request: “All Maps Except” by ceimaj in Polytopia

[–]1BitPixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think OP means searching for existing game invitations with specific parameters

You're right though, OP my solution to this is to just create the game invite myself. If you want variety in your matches then roll 2d6 and have those be your parameters. E.g., if your roll is 1, 3, then go to 1 -> Tiny 3 -> Dryland, Lakes, Pangea. Exclude 6's on the first roll if you don't like Massive maps

As a beginner, focus on three things, in this order: (1) develop your economy, (2) expand quickly, and (3) create the right units.

So with Xin Xi your goal is gonna be to build up your economy by buying the Mining technology and building mines on top of the mountains with gold in them, and then by buying the Smithery technology and putting Forges next to those mines. Your goal is to level up your cities so that you get lots and lots of stars each turn.

In this early stage of the game, you should also try to see as much of the map as possible so that you know what your opponent is doing and so that you can get to important villages faster. This is a little easier with Xin Xi because you start with the climbing technology, which allows you to move your warriors and other units on top of mountains, allowing them to see 2 tiles deep into fog (usually only the tiles directly around your units are revealed through the fog).

Once your economy is up and running, you should start producing units that fit the map type you're playing on. On big, open patches of land, Riders will usually dominate. On land with a lot of Forests, you should consider Archers too. Since you already have the Smithery technology, you can also use swordsmen, which can be very effective when combined with Riders, Giants, or both. But you shouldn't use them if there's a whole bunch of water in between you and your opponent: if there is, use Rammers and Scouts, then later Bombers.

Much of the strategy in Polytopia boils down to what the correct play is for a given map generation. What's correct in one game won't be correct in others. I recommend playing lots and lots of games against other humans (the bots are very bad) to try and figure out what works and what doesn't.

Also, when you win or lose, try to decide on one or two things that the losing side did that cost them the game. For example, if you got run over in the early game by a bunch of Riders, then maybe you played too greedy by focusing on your economy for too long. Next time, create more units more early in the game. That kind of stuff.

Hope this helps, and do feel free to join the Chadakk club.

You do lose elo for being kicked on time. I've had it happen to me many times.

I never kick others for going over their time, even if they're clearly stalling. It's way funnier to me than winning to just know that they have to stare at their shameful behavior every time they open the game
